This movie in a Bible study

This movie is a perfect base for a bible study.

In the book Finding God in the Movies; 33 Films of Reel Faith by Robert K. Johnston & Catherine M. Barsotti you can find a complete chapter dedicated to this movie!

That is awesome! I'm part of a periodic small group of couples that gets together on Friday nights to watch (mostly) thought-provoking films and then discuss them. This would be perfect; I was actually thinking that already.

Another good one: "The Spitfire Grille." If you haven't seen it, do so. Lots of redemptive threads in that as well, great performances, memorable characters, wonderful score, etc. etc.

Also, a very powerful and pivotal scene has the protagonist softly singing an old hymn "Balm of Gilead," in front of this amazing Maine sunset, a wild mountain man behind her with his hand on her head. My wife has taken to humming it lately, and a friend plunked it out on the piano for us this weekend out of our hymnal (different melody than in flick). Of course, in the film a key line was changed from "to heal the sin-sick soul" to "to make the wounded whole."

As I recall the hymn from college choral days, both lines are in the song. Nothing had to be changed.

MadMan, I see you were already ahead of me re Spitfire ... saw you started an identical thread on that discussion board.
