To me, this movie belongs to a very specific subgenre of crime thrillers, in which major money is at stake and pretty seedy/shady characters form alliances and backstab each other in order to get away with the money.
I was trying to sort of compile a list of similar movies, of which it feels there are many, but I seem to only be able to remember very few:
palmetto
out of time
best laid plans
wild things

Any others come to mind?

The Hot Spot
Red Rock West
Body Heat
The Postman Always Rings twice

There would also be besides the element of film noir .. the black comedy (satire)in this one that cannot be denied....
..............So I would suggest:

The Minus Man
Clay Pigeons
Blood Simple

I'd add "Bad Day at Black Rock," too.

And to see Billy Bob in a much better role, Season 1 of the TV series "Fargo."
