U-turn, Red Rock West, Breakdown, The Hit, Bad day at black rock...

Yeah, this is what i call the perfect quintet, five fingered discount movie set. They all ooze that same, everything-will-happen-on-a-bad-day *beep* And they all have that deserty feeling, crazy characters, off-beat soundtrack etc. Seriously, one day I'm going to watch them all on the same day. Look them up if you don't know them, you might have some trouble with ''the hit'' especially. It's not an easy movie to get ahold of, and I heard the region 1 version dvd is absolutely terrible. I can't confirm that, i myself have got a decent region 2 release.

Ok, enjoy the day who ever's reading this!

Add 1989's "Kill me Again" with Val Kilmer,Joanne Whalley-Kilmer and Michael Madsen to that list.

The Hot Spot and Body Heat are other good recommendations. The Las Seduction is good also.

I've seen Palmetto four times. It is slow paced but perfect viewing for anybody who appreciates good cinema.

I agree. Both the movies are so unbelievably identical. But the female character true identity sets them apart. But the novel that U Turn is basd on was written before "Red rock west".

What a great little thread.

I've not heard of Palmetto (must see it soon!) but the rest are great recommendations. Of course they're all imitating Bad Day at Black Rock, but what a great foundation to imitate. Sincerest form of flattery etc etc.

Good watch-list for cold Manx winter nights.

I'm always partial to movies set in the Southwest so these are right up my alley. You might be interested in:

Cold Around the Heart - David Caruso, Kelly Lynch, Stacey Dash: This is not a great movie but I think it's worth a look. Low-key crime story set in the Southwest.

Phoenix - Ray Liotta: A good flick that went completely under the radar. Cool cast, the story is pretty straight-forward. Of course Ray Liotta is great.

Clay Pigeons - Joaquin Phoenix, Vince Vaughn: Another underappreciated movie imo. Of the three I listed this is easily the best, if that means anything. Great cast. Has a cool small town feel; "Anytown, USA". Not Southwest, as I believe it was filmed in Montana, but still a great setting. Vince Vaughn's performance will probably make or break the movie for you.

Back off! ... Way off!

Wake in Fright (1971), Australian film, stuck in a crazy town.

"When a young Martin Scorsese first saw it at Cannes, where it was nominated for the Palme d’Or, he is reported to have continually erupted, unable to contain his delight."
