Is this what a typical Welsh town is like ?

Does anyone feel this represents a Welsh provincial town ? Or has similarities ?

reply

swansea is a city, but it does represent the mentality of alot of people in the valleys and most people i know love and relate to this film

(i am from wales by the way)

reply

im frm walesl, the rhondda vallys

reply

I lived in Townhill, Port Talbot, Mount Pleasant, the marina and the mumbles. So I think it's safe to say I know the area well.
Well they got the scenery right in Twin town, but i'm sure the drugs that are most heavily abused in Swansea are steroids, from what I can see on Wind Street of a saturday evening.
All the bull dog looking men walking round going a funny pink colour. Twitching.

EAT THIS!!!!!
(no mater what happened in Alien 3.. Hicks lives!!!!)

reply

Is everyone in Wales as good as you at typing?

reply

No it is not. But all over the country, not only Wales the drug scene is out of control. The scenery in this movie is genuine and the charcters are locals exaggerated for the plot.

reply

That just sums up the ignorance that people have towards Wales, it's a city the second biggest in the country.

reply

I'm from "Town" or Swansea as it is more commonly known....and yes, it is like the film. Except more violent. Word is born.

reply

Don't you mean "word is bond"? Stupid mother****er.

I'm from Swansea and the film does portray the hedonistic tendencies of the youth here and the swearing (although not to the extent of what is represented in the film!), but the drug abuse is an exaggeration to say the least.

reply

No...I mean "Word is Born!!".....What I say is the truth.

It's a figure of speach. There's no need to be so rude about it....but it does make a good case for my argument. It's stupid, arrogant, un-educated fools like yourself that made me pack my bags and move to Wiltshire (lovely place).

So yes.....as you can see......the film is true to life.

reply

what part of Port Talbot? I'm from Taibach!!!! lol....sorry I just don't meet many people from Wales on these boards.

Our parents do a lot of emotional damage, from what I've heard it's the best part of being a parent.

reply

BAGLAN!!!

reply

You have my condolences.

reply

Actually, the figure of speech is "word is bond"...

coming from my word is my bond... im telling the truth about this... etc.

reply

Im from Baglan (where the funeral was)
and believe me - it's exactly the same!
Drugs - Nicking Car's - Violence - Swearing Etc ..
Im 17, So I do know !
It's A Mad Town - PortTalbot & Swansea

Word is BORN!!!!!

I know what I mean. Even if other people don't!!

word is bond....ha ha.

reply

It's a good thing that you know what you mean because no one else does. I am pretty sure it's word is bond. That's alright though you can live in your own little world.

reply

I think people of Swansea and generally the valleys can relate to the film.

reply

I'm a Caerphilly boy and I *beep* love Twin Town, it's just an over blown representation of Wales imo.

It isn't far off the truth at times though especially the drug culture.

reply

Yeah, I agree ^^

reply

Dookie is right. It's 'word is BOND'. There is no phrase 'word is born'. And Swansea is not more violent. Buffy is clearly a bit of a thickie. The movie is relatable (valleyboy myself), but the characters and themes are exaggerated.

reply

'Work is Born' derives for a misheard phrase 'Word is Bond' (comes from My word is my bond.) though it has been in popular use since the 90's. So you are both correct.

But saying that the rudeness is completely unnecessary. Though the reply was less than civil even if provoke. :)

2nd biggest in the country? not much to brag about there are 6 cities

all my love

reply

I live in port talbot it may be a sheethole but its near both cardiff and swansea so im happy ^^ and i love Twin town xD

reply

Port Talbotonian here too :P

The drug aspect of this film is probally what its like for most places in the UK i would guess but it points something out we have thats a bit rare, Mushrooms!

reply

im a Cearphilly boy to. I only seen this film for the first time the other day and am watching it again right now on S4C and i must say i love this film. I cant say if this is a perfect representation of Swansea but Carphilly is definatly not like this.

Swansea City Rule btw!!!

You wanna play rough? Ok- Say hello to my little friend!! =Tony Montana

reply

There are a fair few rough areas in town 'Swansea' but it's not to the extent of the film. That is why when driving around Swansea they would cut from Mount Pleasant to Baglan to Bonymaen in one 'apparently' short drive, whereas in reality there's about 10 miles between them.

reply

true, there are a few rough areas ina and around swansea! And in the words of Boss- in town hill even the salvation army are x-directory! My dad and his m8 have watched this film thousands of times and can't seem to stop saying 'i f-ing loves it'!

reply

Well, I came to Swansea to live from Cardiff 2 years ago as it's more peaceful! No it's not like the film in my experience! Yes it can be a bit seedy in some areas (Top end of the High Street for one) but the people are lovely and friendly and I'd never move back to Cardiff.

reply

Totally. I have lived (begrudgingly) in the Welsh valleys for my entire life and when me and my friends watched this video it was almost incredible how perfectly it mimicked the country...

we looked at each other and commented that it's EXACTLY what it's like here. It's just a shame that the rest of the world watching this will think its just an over-exaggeration for comic effect.

The scene where they're buying hotdogs comes to mind, and a man speaking in perfect south-walean dialect tells them "That's where you wanna be boys..down 'ere is where th' fightin' is."

It's funny to someone who doesn't live here because you don't expect an old man that you don't know to talk like that. It's funny to those that do live here because you never expect these stereotypicaly welsh values to be shown on screen so unsubtly.

So yeah, it's portrays exactly what a south welsh town is like. And amongst locals it is well-known that all of the characters in the film are based on REAL people from the Swansea and some exaggerations of events that occurred in Swansea at some time in the 80s.
To be honest though, this film is more of an in-joke than it is a silver-screen film. I don't think anyone could ever understand it unless they knew the culture.

I'd say it represents most British cities... not just the Welsh ones! I live in North Wales... but I visit Swansea every year...and I have to admit... I find it extremely rough. A group of my friends had to call the police while they were there cos someone was getting beaten up with a chain!

reply

Yes, I saw this and thought it's Wales all over! The entire country! I live in Bangor in the north and watching this film makes me feel really Cymraeg haha. Reminded me of a quote I once heard about Liverpool: "Liverpool shouldn;t be in England, it should be in somewhere like Wales oor Scotland. There's the whole mentality of "we're *beep* up and we don't care"' haha

reply

I wouldn't say it's like Wales all over. Especially not rural Wales. I don't even think it's specifically Welsh. Places like London or Glasgow can be just as bad.

IM FROM MORRISTON IN SWANSEA AND YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THIS FILM IS 10 YRS OLD
MOST OF THE *beep* HOLE SCENES WERE FILMED IN PORT TALBOT AND SWANSEA HAS CHANGED ALOT SINCE THEN BUT REMEMBER AMBITION IS *beep* CRITICAL
HAHA PLUS SWANSEA IS NOTHING ATALL LIKE NEWHERE ELSE IN WALES APART FROM CARDIFF THE WORST PLACE IS PROBABLY TURK TOWN (LLANELLI)

reply

I dont know its because the accents and the language used makes it feel like a typical Welsh town. Its just like saying is texas really like whats depicted in Chainsaw massacre (wel not the same but you catch my driff).

I used to live in a small village called "Newcastle Emlyn" which is in Dyfed, West Wales. Quite stuck in the valleys. Anyways, from what I remember. Life in that village was very much like twin town. There was even a pair of brothers, not exactly twins, there was 364 days between them so their birthdays were right next to eachother, who could have BEEN the Lewis twins.

I have friends who live there stil, and nearly every year, there seems to be a new instance of an old school friend or acquaintance dying of a drug related death, or committing suicide or going literally insane due to years of drug abuse.
