Why couldn't he just pay them the compensation?

Given what happened afterwards, if he just paid them the compensation for that man's ladder-related injury, he would have saved everybody and himself a lot of problems.

And its not as if he DIDN'T have the money, right?

Because Bryn thought they where a couple of young lads he could get one over you can tell he thinks they are no threat to him by the way he talks to them it was his downfall
