It is crap

It is crap

reply

No its not. It is very good.

reply

Definitely not crap, but I didn't enjoy it much because it was so gritty and depressing in a true-to-life way.

Do you at least want to explain youre opinion?

reply

Yeah, your opinion of this film seems a little...well, crap.

reply

No it's not. Gritty film with a mixed outcome. I thought the beginners in the film were excellent. Does anyone now the location of the abandoned railway line towards the end.

reply

it is somewhere in north notts ive also been trying to find the location. if i find info ill post it here :)

reply

Although not crap, it does take an awfully long time to get going and is very laboured, which is why a lot of people may not take to it. In my opinion, Meadows tries to make the film TOO "gritty" - that all too precious word for British films it seems - "grit" is what he's going for with the black and white, but the film didn't need it at all. Colour would have done just fine.

The fight scene with Hoskins and Les Battersby at the end was brilliant though - one of the most realistic I've seen in a while and completely justified.

On the whole, not as good as 'A Room For Romeo Brass', Meadows' next film.

i prefer black and while films to colour, there's something about them i can't quite put my finger on...

reply

i thought it was in black an white due to having a low budget. whatever the reason, it compliments the film well.
i found this film to be a highly powerful drama, with believable characters. i even shed a few tears at the end...there's true beauty in amongst the grit!

reply

Yes, black and white film is cheaper to use than colour. But it is sometimes used as a way to add something to the film.

reply

"It is crap" really says nothing... it is admittedly not easy watching, its a realistic, gritty look at youth culture in nottingham, but never the less it is a good film. I'm not sure where the train line is cause i havn't seen it for ages, i've gotta watch the film later so if i recognise it i'll post a response. On the black and white thing, it is seriously not much cheaper to use black and white than colour these day, if he wanted it in colour he could have got the equipment peice of piss.

reply

it is crap? what kind of pig-headed statement is that. you have no idea about what this film is about and your snide little comments are irrelevant. it is a fantastic film and i have very personal reasons for loving it. i know many people and have mates who are just like the characters portrayed here and the film brings back many memories. we used to go hunting with hockey sticks and bb guns when we were kids and 'Gadget' is spot on- so gloriously full of shxt, just like his dad ('bees bite, wasps sting'/ 'thats a fxxking rabbit, mate'). the use of black and white is great, great use of contrast and grain. it adds to the bleakness and atmosphere of the town that the characters inhabit and leaves alot to the viewers imagination, something you clearly dont have crap boy. come on, lets hear you back up such a bold statement.

'you're not a goddam loony now boy, you're a fisherman'

reply

Very good movie; seemingly realistic, but damned depressing. This is why people yearn for "Hollywood-type endings" because there's already too much depression going on in real life. But damn the acting and tone was great.

reply

The only people who complain that the film is too Gritty are people that have never had to live like that or have never known anybody who lives like that.

This is probably the most realistic film made in britain for a long time.

reply

So, is it crap or not?

reply

its not crap

its a good film

Thanks I will check it out.

reply

I agree. Its a great movie. Not for everyone's taste but uplifting and boasting a great central performance from Hoskins. Its his best performance since Mona Lisa.

"All I did was *bleep* your girlfriend, that watch belonged to Errol Flynn!"

reply

Yeah I like Hoskins.

reply

Brilliant film. One of the best British films of the 1990's.

Is it Safe?

reply

Cool!

reply

I reckon, like a lot of early indies, it's black and white predominantly because the stock was cheaper. I mean, yeah, it really adds to the feel of the film, like it does a lot of indie debuts, but it shouldn't be taken as too much of a directorial decision.

But yeah, in colour, the grittyness would have still dominated the feel of the film. Black and white simply augments it.

Tomorrow is my birthday.

this is one of the most under rated British films in years. A real hidden gem.

reply

I didn't find this film gritty at all. It was very touching actually.

I thought it was definitely one of Shane Meadows best, both very funny and very tragic.
