Why not really a bad movie it's not as good as maximum overdrive but that's not my question. The helicopter comes and saves them but there's nobody in there but you hear the radio "just hang on folks" so is the helicopter sort of good? Or is it gonna kill them? Kinda wish they explained it

I just watched the movie again ( having watched it at a kid) and I'm still wondering about this.
The problem is, everyone's acting is so dead pan and monotone in this, I couldn't tell if it was meant to be the radio and the helicopter was remote control? Or, if it was the machine talking.
I remember as a kid I bugged my mum about this " Does the helicopter save them? Is it gonna hurt them?"
If it is another sentient machine, it does open up the question of what it is going to do with them and where it takes them. Maybe some of the machines decided it was better to hold a truce with the humans, who knows.
