so can i dress up as a storm trooper for jury duty

When Barabara Adams said that her wearing her uniform was the same as a military officer was just wrong. For sarters i belive those in the military only were thier uniforms to military court not civilian, and second her uniform does not represent and actual government. Star Fleet has not fought any real battles, i respect that her group does comunity service, and if she were to were the uniform to a comunity service project thats would be more then O.K with me. And a note to Barbara Adams get a pair of sunglases that dont take up half your face. But i guess she's used to pretending to be on planets with multiple suns

Yes you can wear a stormtrooper uniform to jury duty, in fact it will probably help you to be excused from duty if you don't really want to be there. I'll concede that it isn't really a fair comparison to say that a StarTrek uniform is equatable to the military, but that doesn't mean that it can't be worn to more than conventions and fan club meetings. I'll use the examples of Cub/Boy/Girl Scouts, none of them is an official govenment organization but it is acceptable to wear any of their uniforms to public school, which is something the children are mandated to attend like jury duty (except we weren't given $10 a day, allowed to stay in a Motel, or even allowed to go home if we found the teachers guilty of crimes against humanity...sorry got a little off track).
Anyway, although it is a little wierd for the casual observer, she and a lot of other fans are pretty harmless (the "Spiner-Femme" and the guy who keeps asking for Scotty's blood, they need help).

I did say that i had no problem with her going to comunity service and things like that her goup is involved with. And I lerned after i wrote my origional posting that she was excused from the jury for tlaking to the press. But im sure it was hard to avoid them so i wont hold that against her. I do respect the loyalty Star Treck fans have, they still probley cheer shatner after he told them to get a life. Man what was he thinking. Last time i checked there wernt any T.J Hooker conventions with legions of fans lined up around the block

reply

"Get a Life" was an SNL sketch that was supposed to be funny, many fans think it to be so. It even became a the title of a book he wrote that was a hit among fans. Shatner is supposedly very greatful to have the fans that he does.
And I appologize if it seems I was jeering your original post, no harm was intended, I just love a spirited debate.

actually i was told that the SNL sketch was goofing off what he said at a convention watch Trekkies 2 allot of actors from later star treck series could not believe he said it

Barbara Adams in Trekkies 2 is in a ‘conference’ w/ other trekkies gets into a debate about wearing the uniform to jury duty. Her defense was that a US soldier could wear his uniform to Jury Duty so why can’t she wear her Federation uniform?

Well… in response to that… it’s because the US military is REAL while the Federation uniform is something designed by Gene Roddenberry and his people in the costume department

throughout the movie she is constantly challenged to answer if she understands that Star Trek is not real, she give some GREAT answers on how the symbolism of it all IS real BUT not once ever says the show it NOT real. (not an exact quote, just the overall context). It's all very Galaxy Quest.

...and I don't mean that in an Eddie Haskell kind of way.

reply

It's the uniform of an organization lol Who cares what you wear to jury duty, anyway?

reply

sure... why not?

what I want to see is an McDonalds or Chuck E. Cheese employee go to work in uniform.

Want to get out of jury duty?

Tell the Prosecution that you believe in the concept of jury nullification and tell the defense that you believe a police officer has better powers of observation than other people and that you would take the word of a police officer over that of a witness.

That will get you thrown out so fast, it will make your head spin!!

I did that and both the Prosecution and the Defense jumped up so fast to get me out of the room, it was funny to see.

Jury nullification is the belief that no matter what the law is, if you believe that the defendant should be free based on some concept of fairness, then you will ignore the law and acquit.

Maybe she should try out for Survivor? The Boy Scout lady came in second once, so she might be able to win! Yeah never know.

Yes, you bring up very good points. The cause for concern isn't the freaking uniform (hat everyone seems to assume is the issue), it's that she talks about the starfleet and the uniform like they actually exist and compares her costume to the military uniform as if she were an actual veteran. She doesn't seem to grasp the lines between reality and fantasy. She sounds downright demented.

1. She didn't serve in the military and the starfleet doesn't exist- how dare she make the comparison between an *actual* uniform of the *real* military of *actual* comparison to her idiotic costume and her fantasy of herself as a "commander"? One of her co-workers actually calls Adams "intelligent," despite her "quirks." I don't doubt her intelligence b/c of her clothes, I doubt b/c Adams, herself, sounds pretty damn stupid.

2. She actually demanded her coworkers call her "commander" at work... Are you freaking kidding me? Wearing the costume (it's a costume, I don't care what the trekkers/trekkies say) to work is one thing, but having to call my co-worker "commander" based off a fantasy TV show is where I draw the line. If I was her co-worker, I'd tell her to *beep* off. I can't believe her workplace actually tolerated that *beep* Adams should thank her lucky stars they put up with and accepted her rather than having her thrown in the nuthouse.

reply

What she said back then would be consider out of line by today's standards about the whole comparison she made. She no longer holds the rank of Commander, but the rank of Fleet Captain now. Her whole persona might be she is a shame of her sexuality that she is trying to hide who she really is. When I first saw Trekkies on DVD I kept getting this vibe that she might be a Lesbian I'm never wrong.

reply

It's just clothes!

I mean, if a guy goes to jury duty in a T-shirt and blue jeans isn't he wearing his "Friends" -uniform? And what about the business suit -that's the uniform of insurance and bank people -should they be allowed to wear that? -IDIC is a lot better to 'wear' than what we ('the public') have come to understand as the businessmans code... I'd trust a trekkie (i uniform) over anyone wearing pinstripes any day!

Right?

Time is the fire in which we burn.

I love barabara adams. And thank the lords of coball for her existence. Shes awsome.

What is the real question here is- what would you think if you were defendant in a case, and had a juror in Star Trek uniform... How comfortable would you be about it?

reply

I certainly would not feel ok with the fact that i was being judged by someone who CLEARLY was nucking futs.

Comparing her homemade/fan made Starfleet uniform to the uniform of military service is bullsh*t. For one thing a military uniform along with any rank and/or awards displayed are earned. Anyone can go out and make or have made a Starfleet uniform and put on whatever rank they choose. It's a Halloween/make-believe costume to be worn all in good fun plain and simple.

I can't tell if you're male or female so it's hard to say if things have changed or not...when I was a kid in Catholic school the boys (and men) had to take off their hats, the women were required to have something on their head.

So much for getting sidetracked...

The point is, the lady wasn't wearing her "uniform" as a sign of respect, or propriety, or symbolism, or even just plain old comfort.

She was wearing it (as she herself admitted) because she actually was a Starfleet Captain, and was expected to do so.

I've no problem with kids wearing Boy Scout uniforms, as long as they're really Boy Scouts. If a 56-year-old man shows up for jury duty in a Cub Scout uniform, saying he's a 10-year-old Cub Scout, and I'm the guy on trial, I may have a few qualms about it.

RE: "And a note to Barbara Adams get a pair of sunglases that dont take up half your face."

I understand how you might say that. While watching Trekkies for the first time my friend blurted out, "She's wearing console TVs on her face!" However, I happened to meet her once and she is TINY. Those glasses she's wearing are actually totally average size. They just look big on her because she is much smaller than average height.

reply

Now that it is 2012, is she still wearing this uniform and advocating the principles of star trek or has the phase worn out yet?

reply

I don't think your allowed to obscure your face, so no helmet.
