why does everybody thinks that it´s better than te first?

I just don´t understand!!! Would anyone be so kind to explain me?
I grew up with Toy Story 1 and I think it´s one of the most beautiful motion pictures in the history of man kind. Then I heard that a second part was coming and I thought: "wow how wonderful!! yipee yay!!" and alll that stuff. But then I watched it, and I admit that I felt extremely disappointed with this film. I think it was sassy, I think it was extremely exagerated and too over-worked. I don´t know if the Spanish traduction (I´m mexican) gave me that impression, but I´m not satisffied with anything about this movie.

Well...most critics (and I would agree with them) basically said that Toy Story 2 did everything Toy Story did at the same level, or a level higher.

I'm not sure how anybody could watch it and seriously think "I'm not satisfied with anything about this movie." It has a 100% rating on Rottentomatoes, for God's sake...

well, I´m sorry but I just don´t find this movie that satisfying. It´s very nice OK, but as an isolated film not as the sequel of one of Pixar´s masterpieces!! I found the character of the little sassy super-happy pink/flower power cowgirl quite unnecesary.They forced the comedy a little too much (in the original film they didn´t need to satirize Star Wars or Barbie toi get the laughs). Besides, the characters weren´t as real as in the first one.

I´m sorry if you believe that no one dislikes Toy Story 2, but I´m afraid I just can´t say "I´m satisfied".

I don´t care what Rottentomatoes say, they grade "The Fountain" with a 50%, a total mistake.

I agree with you Peg - the first TS will always be my favorite, it just had that little extra...something! Part TS 2 was a great sequel, but not as enticing as the first, IMO.

There's nothing wrong with your opinion. Even though I love the second one more I can still see why you would think this because its very hard to surpass a classic. One of the strengths in the first Toy Story was the writing. I think the reason why people like the sequel more is because their was a little more tear jerkers in this one. For the most part the first one was upbeat and that was how it got across its message. That's not a bad thing. If anything that made it more unique. So enjoy the first one. There's nothing wrong with hating the sequel. Its your opinion. people just like the second one more because it took an extreme amount of passion and risks. It decided to up itself a little bit and how much emotion it could through at an audience

I don't agree with the high and mighty critics at rotten tomato. ALL of my fav films of ALL time don't have 100%: Pan's Labyrinth has some dumb bitch saying it was unoriginal, You should see how pissed off people are over there commenting on her review (which makes NO sense) Rotten Tomatoes is Rotten *beep*

Are you saying people aren't allowed to criticise the movie because it has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes? I LOVE Toy Story 2, but that's an odd thing to say. Rotten Tomatoes is not the gospel.

Toy Story has an 8.1 rating, and is currently ranked #176 on the top 250.

Toy Story 2 has an 8.0 rating, and is not on the top 250.

So apparently everybody does NOT think the sequel is better than the first.

That said, I love them both, but the original edges it out for me just slightly. It's mainly due to the annoying cow-girl, and the lack of an excellent villain (Sid was a far better villain than "AL" and The Prospector).

Yes I perfectly agree with you: Jesse was a very unnecesary cliche-character. The Prospector was (literally) a child´s game compared with Sid.

Why does it bother you so much what other people think? You like the first Toy Story more so what's your problem? Everyone else HAS to have the same opinion as you or the world isn't right?

The first Toy Story was ground breaking, we had never seen the like before and Pixar were able to pull it off masterfully.

Come 1999, Dreamworks had broken into the 3D animation market and Pixar had a serious competetor for something they invented. I always consider Pixar to be superior though, and they showed it with Toy Story 2 which expanded the whole story.

I was touched by Toy Story 2's plot, particularly to the plight of Jessie and the reality that toys don't last forever. And kids don't keep them forever. It brought back, and still does when I see it, memories of my own childhood and how significant it is when it ends. There is also something in Pete's bitterness that's worth mentioning, as well as his betrayal.

Yes, there were more pop-culture references, but if I want to see a film like that I can just watch the Shrek series, which the two Toy Story films blow into utter insignificance.

There was also the humour, not all of it in-your-face and some of it very subtle.

But I loved it, bring on the third!

I agree that the reason the second movie is generally judged to be better than the first is that, while the first movie has an interesting adventure and a "bonding" experience between Woody and Buzz, TS2 engenders some reflection about the fleeting nature of childhood. In fact, Jessie's and Woody's children "owners" eventually will (or already did) outgrow them -- just as they will eventually outgrow their own parents and leave their parents behind -- much as Jessie's owner leaves her behind (and as Woody's Andy will eventually lose interest in him, too). The parent-to-child metaphor woven through the story is what brings me back to it, and that makes me believe that it is a superior creation compared to the first.

Well... at least you're not the only one who thinks the first film is the best one.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against "Toy Story 2". It's a entertaining and enjoyable film, but I think it's more sentimental and more moody than the first one. There were enough action going on, but still "Toy Story" would manage to not have a sequel.

Pretty certain a great percentage of the reason you are so attached to the first Toy story is because it was the first of it's kind, and will always give us all that nostalgic joy of watching this movie at least, twice a day?

But where TS1 was unclear and generic, TS2 expounded and made sense in. As someone mentioned earlier, the metaphor of parent - child relationship was awesome. I personally rate both movies equally, non better than the other, nostalgia will always hold higher grounds for most of us.

for me the first one will always be a classic but i liked the 2nd one just caus i liked the story and i used to be obsessed with toys so i cud relate

Toy Story :- A path breaking cinema. 1 hour movie. The screen space is dominated by two characters - Woody and Buzz and rightfully so. A great movie.

Toy Story 2 :- One of the greatest sequels ever. I loved the fact that it was not just Buzz who set out to find Woody but the slinky dog, Rex, Mr Potato head, Piggy bank who too set out. I loved this movie even more because of one scene :-

Buzz :- "I will never give in. You killed my father!"

Zurg :- "No, Buzz. I, AM your father."

Buzz :- "NOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo."

I also think the first is better. There is something about the second that just feels...rushed. I can't put my finger on it. I also felt Buzz was short-changed in TS2.

I remember watching Toy Story in the Cinema when I was younger and enjoying it. I never got round to watching Toy Story 2 until a few months ago, and I really hated it, everything about it: The awful song, the voices of nearly everyone, the fact that none of the jokes were funny, too many references to other things that were just there for the hell of it (2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, because those films and Toy Story 2 are definitely on the same wavelength content-wise). It felt like it was trying too hard to be sentimental and funny and failed at both. I honestly think The Nostalgia Critic should do a review of it.

Toy Story 2 is a great movie. But the first one is a friggin' classic. And the experience of seeing it in the theatre when I was 8 years old was a once in a lifetime experience.

I saw the first film, but just never really got into the overall fandom of it.

I was turned off by Sid's 'experimentation' on toys as well as Buzz's 'mental state.'

TS2 to me was much more tolerable, and I grew to really like Buzz as a character in TS2, where we see how he really has come to see Woody as a friend, willing to navigate treacherous streets and roadways to help get him back.

TS2 also deals with a rather grown-up topic wrapped into this toy's world. Woody's fears of Andy going away and growing up...it mirrors the emotions in some parents when they realize that their children will have that happen to them. Finding that connection that makes a toy seem like a parental figure really hasn't been considered. The large majority of people (with little imagination) would say a toy is a toy. It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it's a stupid little thing of fabric and plastic.

But PIXAR took the concept that children tend to imbue life in their toys, and took that to a place that really makes them as alive and real for so many people.
