Wild Mass Guess: Emily is Andy's mom

Added to TV Tropes by IP address 64.83.215.91:
"Emily, Jessie's previous owner, did grow up in the seventies, as betrayed by her psychedelic pink room, so she would obviously be of the older generation. And she must have lived in the same area as Andy's family if her Jessie doll ended up at one particular Al's Toy Barn in the area. The hairstyle we saw in the quick shots of Emily resembles Andy's mom's hairstyle." (Mrs. Davis had a ponytail in the first film like Emily, but in the 2nd and 3rd films, Mrs. Davis wears her hair down.)

What do you think? Discuss.

reply

I suppose you don't see her reaction to seeing Jessie in his room do you...but she did come in at the end when he was fixing Woody and didn't say anything.
That would be cool if it was! Interlinked stories! WOuldn't surprise me if Pixar was capable of that.
But Woody being Andy's father's doll? Not sure, there's no evidence for that really is there.

Doesn't Andy's mom tell Al that Woody was a family heirloom? It very could be Andy's dad's doll as he was a hand-me-down.

reply

She just says it's an old family toy but that might just be referring to the fact that Andy has had him forever. I think it makes sense that if Andy's mom was Emily, she would have bought her son a Woody doll when he was a baby because it brought back memories of the cowgirl doll she loved so much.

reply

She would've had to buy Woody used, then, because it's implied Woody was made at the time of "Woody's Roundup," which in the context of the story, was only popular until 1957 (Sputnik).

I think it makes more sense if Woody was Andy's dad's toy, since his mom refers to Woody as an "old family toy." Is Andy's dad dead? We never see him, and if he gave Woody to Andy, Andy may like Woody all the more as a memento of his dad.

reply

Well, in a short video describing how they designed the Woody doll for the Toy Story Collection released last year, John Lasseter said that they had always pictured Woody being a hand-me-down from Andy's father.

reply

In addition to that, Stinky Pete calls Woody a "hand-me-down cowboy doll"

reply

Maybe Woody was hers to...if she had one member of the round up, why wouldn't she have the leader of the round up?

reply

Let me just say one thing...
I love this idea!!!

That's all :-)

would have been quite the revelation to hear andy's mom say about jessie.

"I remember having one of these as a kid."

Just a side note... "Emily Davis" has a nice ring to it. (She would have only had this name after her marriage to Mr. Davis.)

reply

John Lasseter said Woody was Andy's dad's toy.

I'm like a pussycat...

reply

I wasn't aware of this, but I in another thread, I thought this was the case, even to the point that Andy's Dad may have been named Andy, and it was Grandma who put Woody in storage. He's in great shape for a toy that is 40+ years old.

reply

The flashbacks to Jesse with Emily are definitely not in the 70s. The styling of the posters and things in her bedroom is very 60s, and her outfits (saddle shoes and baggy cuffed jeans) look late 50s/early 60s. If the Woody toys are supposed to be from the 50s, it makes sense that she would outgrow them as a teen in the 60s, not in the 70s.

Also, this would probably make her too old to be Andy's mom.

reply

Well, it's not that hard to accept it as being his dad's toy. I have some of my dad's stuff from when he was younger, too.

Also, my grandfather was born in 1923 and my dad was born in 1958, so it's not that hard to think in that sense.

Andy's dad had to have been born before 1957 as Stinky Pete mentions that Woody's roundup ended when Sputnik was launched.
so my guess as to when Andy's dad was born was 1949 more or less. That would make him approx. 7-8, which would make Andy's father a better chance of remembering the show. Now if you keep my grandfather in mind, it is very possible that Andy was born around 1986 while his father was in his late 30s.

If I remember correctly, Woody says something like he hadn't seen a record player in a long time, so Woody would more than likely have been his father's toy. If Andy's father is dead, that would more than likely explain Andy's continual love for Woody as his favorite toy.

reply

this always confused me. If Woody was Andy's fathers toy then why did Woody worry that Andy would grow up and move on. It would seem that if he had already been through a previous owner then you'd think Woody would've realized that Andy would grow up and move on.

I mean I would prob think it's his father's toy but the continuity doesnt exactly fit...

That's exactly WHY Woody would worry about Andy growing up and moving on (IMO). Maybe Woody had been in a box up in the attic for a while and worried about having to go through that again. Think about how upset Jessie was when she thought she would have to go back into storage. Woody was a much more cool character so he wouldn't have freaked out about it, but it makes sense to me that he would worry about it.

Andy's real name is not Pietro Maximoff

reply

It could be possible - they seem to do little things like that in Toy Story movies and leave it up to the viewers to either 'get' it, or just leave it for them (the animators and creators) to remember.

I've always wondered why Woody didn't have memories about his previous owners if he was a family toy. It would have gave us some insight on Andy's dad. Also Woody knew a lot about the attic and all the other things that were up there in ts3 so maybe he had been boxed up for a bit.
