Why did they cover up Carver's death?

What was to gain by covering up Carver's death the way M did at the end of the movie?

Why would it be bad for the world to find out he was an evil bad guy?

Why was that a bad thing?

reply

They didn't have any proof that he was a bad guy (none that they could show the public).

Also, it might undermine public confidence in Her Majesty's military forces to tell the public that a newspaper publisher was able to sink one of their best surface vessels, murder their sailors and play them to the brink of war with China.

Proof?

You had the wreckage of the Stealth ship. A money trail to purchase that ship. Bond's testimony alone would have sunk him.

So reputation trumps the truth...... That's corruption IMHO

It would scare people. That is why MI6 never revealed what happened. There are some things best left known to those who can handle it. Like Area 51 for example. They threaten to shoot anyone on site if they get past the gates. There is some top secret work going on there that the world cannot handle because it would scare the living daylights out of us. Only a few people have been able to handle such information. My mother told me about a guy who's friend who used to work at Area 51. He gave the guy a tour of the place. By the time the guy was done he was freaked at what he saw there. I think the guy was a celebrity or something. Don't recall when it happened either. I think it was the 60s?

Would you be able to live the rest of your life relaxed knowing that a stealth ship like that existed and the person owning it tried to start World War III? I don't think so.

reply

It wouldn't scare people as much as you think.

Not when they know the bad guy was dealt with and killed. That would satisfy people.

And as for Area 51 yeah let's make that out to be a lot more then it is.

As Tommy Lee Jones explained to Will Smith in Men in Black: "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, and dangerous."

Wars have been fought for far less a thing on our planet.

There are a couple of things that spring to mind when you watch it. One even in death Carver was going to get a taste of his own medicine. The other that it was a reference to the real life death of Robert Maxwell which happened just as when his dubious dealings in his company's pensions had been disclosed.

reply

It minimizes the damage he in the public eye and makes it look like he was just another person who took the easy way out.

I am remembering this right, the official release did say he was believed to have committed suicide, right?
