He exists only in memory. what a line! and dream or is she dead?

I think this is the line that always gets me. its not Jacks death at all. it's when Old rose says "I don't even have a picture of him he exists only in memory' I am always ok till I get to that line

Every single time that gets me.. as someone also that has recently lost both parents to cancer within 11 months of each other. and my father who completely loved this movie it even get's to me more now.

My father always had the theory that she didn't die at the end that because of the song first line 'every night in my dreams' he always thought she was just dreaming of him at the last scene. but I always took that she died old in a warm bed like Jack said she would.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your parents.

As far as the ending, it's up in the air. Like you, I always took it that she did everything she wanted to do in her life, and the closure she got from revisiting Titanic was enough to complete her life - Rose dies in her sleep in a nice warm bed like Jack told her she would.

As far as the song, the song was added to the score late in the production, and was written for the script already being shot or already completed. The lyric "Every night in my dreams I see you, I feel you. That is how I know you go on" would represent her entire life from the time she landed in New York. She dreamed of Jack often during her lifetime, so I don't think the lyric had anything to do with her dreaming at the end.

But that's my opinion. Other than Jack's comment about her dying in a warm bed, there is no evidence in the script that Rose was dreaming or that Rose died and was reunited with Jack.
