How did you think that would have gone?

Like in "Revolutionary Road."

Depends. I doubt Rose would have wanted to live homeless with a man who didn't want to work for the rest of her life. So it would depend on what Jack did next.

Rose would have been miserable as the wife of a dirt-poor shiftless artist, and Jack didn't want to have to support a wife and kiddies. So they both would have been miserable, but not as miserable as the kids they would have had!

Really, that's the central problem with this film. You can't root for the lovers to be together, you just want them to get the breakup over with.
