How did rose know that jack did NOT steal the diamond?

She didn't really explain very clearly as to how she was truly convinced, that jack was innocent of the setup crime!

She knew right before Cal slapped her. I think she knew from the get go that he was framed. She knew she would be in trouble, especially since she intended for Cal to find the drawing and the note. An earlier script had her acknowledging that there would be risks for trying to war Cal and her mother about the situation Titanic was in.

Thank you for your answer! Also, how does jack NOT feel a heavy diamond being dropped into the coat pocket?

reply

I've always thought this. My conclusion is that the jacket was long, so the pockets were a little further down, thus making it not as heavy. Having said that, there were other ways they could have written that scene.

I actually do not think she knew until they were at the lifeboats and Cal made the comment about the value of the picture he made of her.

Yes! Great point! I just rewatched the 2nd-half of TITANIC and rose SADLY gave into the belief that jack stole the diamond because we as viewers NEVER saw rose witness that jack put the diamond back in the safe, while she was looking down and writing the mock love letter note for cal....... Yes, we saw lovejoy putting the diamond in jack's coat pocket but had rose actually walked w/jack to the safe and witness him put the diamond back in the safe instead of her just trusting Jack to respect her request to strictly put the diamond back inside the safe, then she TRULY could NOT know for sure! She also seemed to give into her mother and cal by going w/them towards the lifeboats but when cal mocked jack's beautiful drawings to rose, it only PISSED HER OFF! Cal should've KEPT HIS MOUTH SHUT and showed more compassion towards Rose...... He could NOT simply be happy that the momentum of rose choosing him at the end was best enough! Yes, you're correct..... Cal's cocky attitude and massive ego is what got her to turn favor and momentum back in jack's favor!

When they were waiting for lifeboats, Cal said, "it's a pity I didn't keep that drawing, it would be worth a lot more by morning".

Right then and there, she probably realized he framed Jack.
