Old Rose's oscar nomination...why?

did they just throw her a bone that year for coming back to play that role at such an old age? She was barely in it.
Were there no other worthy nominations that year.

I actually thought Frances Fisher was more deserving. She brought nuances to the character. She suggested a lot of her character's back story.

I agree that Frances Fisher should have gotten a nomination. Her performance is so memorable. Her character slowly reveals herself throughout the movie. She starts out uptight, steely, and cold. Then you get some of her backstory as to what motivates her actions and we really understand Ruth as a more complex, desperate, frightened woman. Then she has the emotional breakdown of letting her emotions poor out as she witnessed the ships destruction and supposed death of her daughter. Her being comforted in the life boat in the arms of Molly Brown, a woman she shunned socially and looked down on was quite touching. Fishers acting was quite superb in conveying the complexities and emotions of her character.

Your view on the character, while spot on and very articulately laid out won't be appreciated on this board. With characters like Ruth and Cal,people tend to see them simply as villains with actions motivated purely just because their bad because they are foils two the less interesting lead couple. They see a character like Ruth and think her actions are motivated by simply being a bitch or a rich snob, instead of being desperate in a world that didn't give women a lot of options. I found her charachter was more nuanced than Rose, who was merely an unrealistic, anachronistic girl from the 90's placed in an Edwardian period setting.

There's always people who can't separate a role from an actor, and this board is no different, but I think you underestimate what I believe the majority of board readers think. Remember that only a small percentage of readers actually respond to posts.

Fisher was excellent, Zane was fabulous.

Hola strntz, you have mistaken or perhaps I wasn't clear, when I was saying that the other persons view was not going to be appreciated, it was indeed referring to those that post on the board not the readers who's opinions we cannot know.

WRONG, they were not pay toilets they were free.

Who said anything about not being able to afford it? That is merely the location that she operates her business. She'd rather all the money go to her than having her customers waste it on a pay toilet. Also, some of her customers have certain proclivities that readily available with the location.

Fisher's performance is fantastic, no doubt, but I don't think that - given her limited screen time - it was worthy of a nomination. Perhaps I'll watch the film again with her in mind and change my view. She has one fantastic "go for the Oscar" scene, but she's a smidge too theatrical in my view.

reply

People have won oscars for supporting roles despite very limited screen time. Dame Judi Dench won an Oscar for her 8 minutes in Shakespeare in Love.

There were two great moments Old Rose had. The first is when she is brought to tears while having flashes of the Titanic (right before she tells the story).

The second her speech at the end "1,500 people went into the sea when Titanic sank from under us. There were 20 boats floating nearby and only one came back One. Six were saved from the water, myself included. Six, out of 1,500. Afterward, the 700 people in the boats had nothing to do but wait. Wait to die. Wait to live. Wait for an absolution, that would never come."

Not sure about any other nominations that year, but it seems like some sort of a quid pro quo to me. I thought she almost mailed it in, at least, I think she was a marginal actress at best. I think the story and her lines were far bigger than her performance.

If there are any actors from a Titanic film that should have been nominated for an Oscar but didn't they are Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck.

reply

They all came across as marginal, due to the soggy script.
