Anyone else think Jacob's (BB Thornton) character was really good?

I was really impressed by Thornton's performance in this film. All three main characters were very well acted and believable, but Thornton really stood out, probably because I attended UC Berkeley's engineering department and I spent 4 years in the middle of ultra-hardcore "revenge of the nerds" characters and I always wondered how in the world these people totally devoid of social skills were going to function in actual society. Of course, Jacob wasn't "smart but socially inept"; he was not very bright and socially inept, but the concept is similar.

It's spelled Raymond Luxury Yacht, but it's pronounced 'Throat-Warbler Mangrove'

I completely agree. There was great depth to his character. The way you couldn't quite tell who's side he was going to take (his brother or the friend) was done brilliantly. I haven't seen Billy Bob in many movies but I have great respect for him as an actor after seeing this one.

I haven't read the book in a while, but isn't Jacob supposed to be....fat? Like really fat? I'm yet to see the film.

I thought his performance was superb - Oscar-worthy but then he is one of THE finest actors !

Is the Jacob character mildly retarded? What exactly was the deal with him?

reply

I agree, OP. Billy Bob Thornton and Bridgette Fonda were the best. I didn't much care for Paxton's performance.

BB Thornton is a chameleon. Brilliant actor. His range is superb. From Sling Blade to Bad Santa....he's amazing.

An old thread, but I agree that BBT's performance was great. He was nominated for Best Supporting, he should've won! I don't know who did win that year. He's good in comedy and drama, I respect that. He seems odd in real life, kind of quirky, but nice. I met him and got his autograph on the set of Bandits with Bruce Willis (who refused to sign any).

Delicious must be heaven to the hungry in hell.

Billy Bob Thornton is one of the best actors out there.
I personally think "Sling Blade" is his best work yet.
Check it out if you haven't already.
