Why even lie about killing Lou?


If the brother's had only told the police that Lou confessed to the old man murder, and when he found out he was recorded saying it he became hostile trying to kill them. Then once he wife saw what happened, she went for her gun and was shot by the brothers. Making two cases of self defense from a man already admitted to murdering.

How would he explain the fact that he had a recorder on him, that also managed to conveniently record the confession?
