Any other indigenous people like this film?

Sago! I'm from the Six Nations reserve, the same reserve that Gary Farmer and Graham Greene are from, located in southern Ontario. I thought this was a good movie that really depicted the lives of young reserve indigenous people, Gary Farmer portrays the role of an abusive but caring parent so well, it almost reminded me of my own father. Although this film is fiction, I would really like to see films of urbanized indigenous people, those who have grown up and are living off the reserve having being exposed to the non-indigenous cultures. I myself have many ideas and would like to share them perhaps colaborate and maybe write a screenplay. I really believe if we can get stories and opinions from indigenous people from around north america, a movie could be made that would really portray the true culture of the indigenous people!

The current project I am working on involves a few indigenous youth who attend an urban catholic high school who all play lacrosse. I would like the theme to involve issues such as drugs, alcohol, abuse, peer pressure and sex, along with some comic relief. Please PM me if you also have any ideas or stories to share.

Good luck with your film, it sounds like a wonderful idea, and something I would very much like to watch! :)

I'm not Native American, but I really liked both "Smoke Signals" & "The Business of Fancydancing", as well as many others... One of which is "The Doe Boy" which, though very sad, I found to be very moving indeed. I still tear up and begin to get emotional just thinking of it... Of the Cherokee Brave scene towards the end, and of the plot twist I didn't for the life of me see coming. :(

In any case, good luck - I haven't realy seen any urban-centered Native American films - even "The Business of Fancydancing", which deals with leaving the res, and with identity and sexuality issues, takes place more on the res than in the city... Good luck!

I'm not really the target of this thread, not being indigenous... but I have to say that I really liked it, and I'm glad to see all of you saying it was so realistic--it certainly seemed that way to me. Up til then, the only movies I'd seen with Indian actors or characters were old westerns, where they're always the stereotypical bad guys, or the Dances With Wolves type of movie, which focuses on the white wannabe and plays up the noble savage stereotype, but doesn't really show what life is like for indigenous people today--and, more importantly, doesn't tell the story from the native point of view. (Thunderheart also falls into that trap, even with a contemporary setting.) We non-natives seriously need a reality check on that. If and when your movie gets made, I'll definitely see it, with or without big name stars. Best of luck!

My grandfather is a Seneca in Upstate New York, in the Finger Lakes Region. I am not recognized among the tribes here, but my heart sings. I left feedback for this film because I heard too many white people speak of how "cute" it was; how "sad" it seemed; how they "hoped if there was another film it would be happier." I worked in a video store at the time, I've got a dreamcatcher on my left bicep, a thunderbird on my right, kokopelli on the back of my neck, a life spiral on my right wrist, and yet not one white person could hear what I was saying about reality. No one would go with me to Salamanca, the Rez here. My dad's never been there. He can't get why I go there, and why my kids like to be there. He's never heard the earth cry even though he was brought up with a lot of the old ways. I think this movie, Alexie's stories and novels, and all of the other indigenous voices need to rise up and bring attention to reality before our beautiful mother earth is so damaged she never sings again.

I'm only about 1/16th cherokee, but I grew up in the slums of the Tulalip Indian reservation on the Puget Sound in WA. Born and raised until 1993. I could feel for this movie, anyone who sees me will automatically view me as any other caucasian, but I grew up with this *beep*. I mean rez cars, so much I can relate to. guess I'm kind of like the white kid who grew up in the black suburbs right? ah well. anyways, good luck with this movie.

I think this is great to find ppl who think similar to me, an i hope u are able to get them movies made, shatter sum of those wite ppls images of us as painted chicken feather wearin ppl wit plastic toma hawks, lol. I have tried talkin 2 wite ppl an tryin 2 educate them bout how we are not what hollywood likes to portray us as, but they nevber wanna hear it, its like the only way they can accept indians is if they conform to what they want us to be, so the more natives we get breakin those stereotypes and making it into the media biz the better.

An i live so far from the rez that i don do any of the tribal things either, but i go to the powwows aroun where i live. As far as the whole ndn hatin on ndns thing, unfortunately theres alot of ppl like that, i don really kno y it is. daym, an indian who never had frybread, lol. jus playin, i don kno how 2 describe it cuz it ain really like no other type of bread. I donno about any powwows over there, I live in jersey here theres only one powow that i kno about thas at the powhatan rez, there arent very many natives in jersey. Daym, y does he hate on natives so bad. Yea those questions are annoyin as hell, PPl always first ask me if Im either puertorican or mexican, then wen i tell them wat I am they are like, "oh, like the tipi kind of indian", an they think we all talk 2 trees an hug rocks, lol. all cuz the only indians they ever seen was the *beep* hollywood fake stuff, thas y i cant wait to see more natives in movies playin real ppl an less characters like wat we usually see. The company is called bigsoul productions, it was started by jenifer podemski who is an ojibwe actress, to give more oportunities to native youth in the media, theres a couple other native owned and operated companies for native youth in movies etc. too. They help wit all kins of things not jus acting, i think they also help wit music, film production, art etc. I think wit help from companies an ppl like that we'll be able to see alot more indians in movies playin characters that arent so wite envisioned an have more oportunities for natives.

Frybread is sort of like a very thick & fluffy tostada-- fried tortilla that's not flat. You can get it by itself, or with sugar or honey on it, or with beans on it, or with all the taco makings on it like refried beans, tomato, lettuce, rice, & meat too. It's TASTY, but fattening cuz its cooked in a lot of oil-- like a donut. It's at pow-wows, but it's not like a real pre-european contact thing-- it's not like an "indegenous" thing as they say. It's just inexpensive good tasting food that fills you up & is easy to make, & it's made of regular flour usually.

Like-- if you go to Taco Bell & order a gordita-- its practiaclly the same idea.

Damn you're making me hungry.

BTW-- I named my last junker car with bondo spots "whirlwind dreamer/palomino pony" because of Pow Wow Highway. love that film. Smoke Signals with that car stuck driving backwards is too damn true! LOL

mmmmm soundz good lolz who carez if itz fattening we all prolly eat poundz of sugar a day lolz 2 bad i live in the middle of no where we dun have any fast food restaurantz all we have is a gas station & a bar in town lolz but if i ever go 2 civilization i'll b sure 2 order that lolz
