worst acting in history

For one thing, that's not even near to true... The acting was good... maybe it's the characters that you didn't like.... plus there has been farrrrrrr worse acting in many movies.
Secondly, if you make a claim like that, you should back it up. At least make it credible...

The Durango 95 purred away real horrowshow. A nice warm vibraty feeling all through your guttiwuts

... The acting was good...

what!?!? have you even seen it?

The only questionable acting was from Victor most of the time and the grandmother during the fire. Oh, and those two women in the backwards car were too goofy. I thought everyone else was great, though, especially Evan Adams as Thomas.

You guys will never understand it ( I assume that your white) but you guys thats how most native men speak or act. The grandmother was recovering from her daughters death.

reply

yeah, i also disagree.
i dont think that your statement has any foundation. what parts, actors or characters made you think this way?

personally, i thought the acting was great. The preformances were nothing terribly special, but they were 'real' and they worked very well.

reply

OH MY GOD I TOTALLY AGREE!!

IT WAS THE WOOOOOOOOOOORST ACTING EVEEEEEEEERRRR!!!!!!

I HAD TO WATCH IT IN A CLASS...I CAME OUT CRYING!!!

AND IT WAS SO BORING! GOD!

reply

Melicious, could you be any more immature?

Sometimes it's a good day to die, and sometimes it's a good day to have breakfast.

reply

If you are bored by this movie, there is no hope for you.

reply

Ah, not quite. I'm very familiar with the "native american accent" from hearing it all my life. But I thought it was mostly overdone in the movie.

BTW, that accent is an interesting thing: So many different languages were spoken in North America, why do nearly all indians have the same basic accent -- which sounds a bit Canadian to my ears.

reply

Haha, if you know rez women (or were born and raised on the rez like myself) you'd know that we have a fair share of our "too goofy" women just like them.

reply

Old thread, but in case people still read this.
I know people who are exactly like these two crazy women. My sister being one of them.

Crazy rez women!

reply

You have never, ever been around native americans, have you? I grew up on the Eastern Band reservation in Cherokee, NC. You had any expose at all, you would know the way in which the characters speak is, in fact, a true reperestentation of native americans. Go watch something like "Loggerhead" if you want to see some true, baaaaaaad acting in the year 2006.

reply

Wow...you are so blind to this. This movie is a work of art, not because if its sometimes awkward acting but its MESSAGE. Maybe you don't know any Native Americans, maybe you're even a hater...I dunno. There were so many messages freely given to you tongue-in-cheek by Native American culture and where it is today, that they are too numerous to mention. They all have to be taken in a totality of sorts and breathed in like air and then exhaled slowly. The director is painting a magnificent picture of life on & off the res.

Maybe you'd be better off to watch Final Destination 4,5,6,7 etc....

I ain't white and I ain't no Native American, and the film is SMOKIN'.

Smoke Signals shoulda been nominated for 'The Best' of everything category in the Academy Awards. The film is simply just that, GREAT.

The first time I heard the song 'Father and Farther', it affected me so much that my insides were shaking, what a harrowing song.

Father and Farther

Sometimes, Father, you and I,
Are like a three-legged horse
who can't get across the finish line
no mater how hard, he tries and tries and tries.

Sometimes, Father, you and I
Are like a Warrior,
who can only paint half of his face
while the other half cries and cries and cries and cries.

Now can I ask you Father?
If you know how much farther we need to go?
Now can I ask you Father?
If you know how much farther we have to go?

Father and farther
Father and farther
'til we know?

Father and farther
Father and farther
'til we know?

Sometimes, Father, you and I,
Are like two old drunks
who spend their whole lives in the bars
swallowing down all those lies and lies and lies.

Sometimes, Father, you and I
Are like a dirty ghosts
who wear the same sheets every day
as one more piece of us just dies and dies and dies.

Now can I ask you Father?
If you know how much farther we need to go?
Now can I ask you Father?
If you know how much farther we have to go?

Father and farther
Father and farther
'til we know?

Father and farther
Father and farther
'til we know?

Father and farther
Father and farther
'til we know?

Father and farther
Yeah, how much farther
'til we know?

Sometimes, Father, you and I,
Are like a three-legged horse
who can't get across the finish line
No mater how hard, he tries and tries and tries...

You want to see bad acting, go see Tom Cruise act in movies.
Now, that, is bad acting. And, he gets big money for it too. Go figure :-/

A lot of the "big stars" couldn't act their way out of a paper bag. Tom Cruise, certainly. I've always been underwhelmed with Brad Pitt. I think everyone is underwhelmed with Keanu Reaves.

The acting in this movie seemed very true to the Indians I've known - mostly Chickasaws and Choctaws.

This is exactly true and if someone thinks the acting is "the worst acting in history" then they will probably hate Native Americans and/or are already a closet hater of same.

I agree. I did not like this movie and I did not understand whatever "message" they attempted to send.

The (my) Review of Smoke Signals:
I did not find the film (1) poignant in any way or (2) entertaining for entertainments sake. I found Smoke Signals to be rather uninspiring, there was a lot of hype, and not a lot of substance. The storyline is disjointed and the acting is well below average and unfortunately, the sad performances from the actors did nothing to propel the extremely weak plot. I found Sherman Alexie's story to be lackluster, trying to prove a point which is quite unclear. I wasn't sure if this was a comedy about two opposites thrown together (because there were very few humorous moments, this film certainly was not the sidesplitter that reviews boast it to be) or if it was a drama about a man discovering who his father really was. Too many themes are attempted to be covered, leaving the viewer confused and uninterested. Unfortunately, because of the poor script and unskilled actors, this film was not moving or compelling at all, no emotion was evoked, except disdain for everyone involved in the making of this film. Additionally, the Native American accents sound incredibly bizarre to me and resemble a strange mix of Irish, Indian (from India) and American English dialects. In addition to the film’s disjointed feel, many scenes felt rushed and contrived. The somewhat interesting dynamic and contrast between Victor and Thomas seemed to resolve itself just in time for the end of the film. Also, Thomas' fascination and appreciation for Victor's father, (as the father he never had) is hardly explored or discussed by either character. Conversely, the relationship between Suzy and Victor's father feels completely unbelievable and seems to work only as a means for Victor to better know his father, although I am never convinced that happens. Because of consistent plot holes, or rather underdevelopments, the audience must take great leaps of faith throughout the entire film, hardly any of which pay off.

Could it just be that that is the way they speak? This isn't a product of Method Acting doing what they imagine to be the way rez people speak.

I don't recall any hype about this movie. I saw it in a Film Festival where it was described in the program along with a hundred or more others. I thought it was a refreshing change from the 'professional' movie industry's take.

Your review complains of the movie being disjointed and lacking in humour. Are you being cute? You use a single paragraph complaining of many deficiencies but you show no sense of structure yourself. You also seem to be unaware of the wonderfully understated self-effacing humour. Self-effacing humour is seldom side-splitting and can be easily missed. It's also quite hard to do.

Seems as though it was just too subtle for you. Doesn't mean it's rubbish.

I love Smoke Signals - I think it's brilliant and I love the characters. The only cringe point for me was the crappy wig they had Adam Beach wear - yikes.

"Hey Victor..."

reply

Oh, please...what about the crappy wig they had Gary Farmer wear? I haven't seen a wig that bad since...well...Gary Farmer in "Pow Wow Highway"! LOL
People that do not understand Native culture may not 'get it'. Just because YOU couldn't pick up the messages, that's NOT the film's fault.
"All Indians live in tipis, ride horses, sell tobacco and have casinos, enit???"

reply

I loved the acting, love the whole movie. Every time I see it I get something else from it. The humor is brilliant.

Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves. I used to like that movie, then I was rewatching it and realized how incredibly bad Costner was. Especially when he was narrating/writing in his journal. Painful.

This is relevant because of the reference to it in the movie. Ironic, too.

reply

Well, the film WAS made on a very low budget. I will admit, as much as I love this film, there were maybe a couple of scenes here and there that make me cringe a little. But I think the reason so many people love this movie, and will rightly defend it, is that it has something very few of these types of movies has-a real heart and soul that somehow makes up for whatever it may be lacking in production values or A-list actors. In fact, maybe it's the absence of the latter that enables it to have so much more of the former. (Because as we've all seen with disasters like, say, Alexander, just for example, a big budget and big production values do not always translate into good movies). The heart of this movie is its very simple story, and I think it hits just the right note, being neither slickly overproduced nor overacted.
