EBERT'S RATING

Roger gave Taste of Cherry one star.

He gave every Twilight movie two stars.

Where's his humanity?

reply

Roger's about as mediocre as they come.

While I'd agree Ebert was too generous to Twilight, I think he pegged this movie dead on. It's time from my life that I will never get back and which I could have spent doing something more meaningful...like maybe counting the the number of tiles in my house. This film is truly an example of the emperor has no clothes and a wasted spine number in the Criterion collection (right up there with Bay's Armageddon). I hope Kiarostami's other films are much better than this one. I'll be really annoyed if his other Criterion title (Close-Up?) is another waste of a Criterion spine # and another Criterion title that I'd be annoyed to have to purchase if I ever got any completionist notions about the CC (I only own about around 65-70 Criterion titles at the moment + the Late Ozu Eclipse box). It's a shame that Criterion's recent losses to Studio Canal/Lionsgate didn't include crap like this film and Armageddon instead of classics like 5 Bunuel titles and 2 Powell/Pressburgers.

If fishing for bewilderingly positive Ebert reviews to cherry-pick as examples of him being too generous to absolute crap, you forgot about his 3 stars for Transformers. Luckily, he regained his senses when reviewing its sequel which is even more hideously awful (or so I'm told as I refused to see it after being forced to watch the first one by a so-called friend).

Sometimes I suspect Ebert never really got over his drinking problem.

I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!

reply

I wouldn´t worry about Ebert.

Actually, did you read his review of this movie? He was pretty accurate through and through. It's well-made and sports an interesting idea at its core, but good God, what an empty and tedious experience this was.

well, you can't get it "right" with every movie, that's one of the risks of being a movie critic

so many movies, so little time
