When does the camera move?

I've seen this film 4 times and I am resolute that I hadn't seen the camera not static. I keep hearing about it moving ONCE. Where is this?

The camera moves during the scene at the train station. Kalle is being followed by the man which committed suicide, the man of witch he had borrowed money. The camera moves backwards.

Yup - that's absolutely correct - I also was watching it for the 4th time today and one of my friends I was watching it with remarked excitedly "The camera actually moved !" it was during that one scene. He was so enthralled for catching it that we went back and reviewed the directors comments and the director confirms that that scene was the only one that the camera actually moved in.

In fact, if you want to find out more about this movie, the meanings behind the imagery, how they built the sets, etc ... I strongly recommend getting the DVD & checking out the extra features on it.

it guess its technically twice, because when the Lieutenant is in the taxi with Kalle's son, the camera creeps slowly forward mounted on the hood. But that doesn't really count now does it?

reply

the camera i think, SHAKES (more like VIBRATES) in the scene where there's a meeting going on and one of the suits notice a building nearby is moving. the moment he says this out loud to the other board members, i felt the camera shook a bit.

It's amazing how greatly that works - not moving the camera except for once. I noticed it as well and was absolutely stunned by the scene at the train station - just because the camera was moving. Brilliant work of photographi and scenographi on the film...

reply

It's not the camera that is moving, the building is moving.
;o)

reply

It´s neither the camera nor the building that´s moving, your mind is moving. ;O

Actualy that was just earth rotation.

Old thread, but i'm still curious: any interpretations to why the camera moves only in that one scene? It must have meaning, if it's the only place in the entire movie, i just haven't figured out what it is yet, so i'll take any suggestion.

According to the director (in the DVD commentary), he could not think of another way to shoot the scene. He had to show that the dead friend was following the protagonist and tracking backwards was the only way he thought he could show that. He expressed some disappointment in moving the camera during this scene as he would have preferred the entire film be made up of static shots.
