So, several times characters look at the camera. What does that mean? Is it just to make us uncomfortable through a feeling of "being there", or is there a deeper meaning? The director explained this in the DVD commentaries?

I think it might be to imply that they are singing to and for you from the 'second floor'. Inviting you to look at their lives.
