Was it mentioned in the movie where the story was taking place? For some reason I keep recalling British Columbia, but I'm not sure. And when the characters refer to "the city," are they referring, then, to Vancouver?

Initially, judging from the mountains and forests, I was guessing somewhere in northern British Columbia, but maybe I'm wrong.

We had a thread on this a while ago: www.imdb.com/title/tt0120255/board/nest/69081290?p=1. The short version: the book was set in New York; the movie was filmed in British Columbia and Toronto; there are concepts in it that are peculiar to the U.S.; there are a few places in the film that betray its Canadian origins; and the director deliberately did not specify where the story was taking place.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't about the rifle through old posts.

I thought it was set in BC but the scene where Zoe calls her father and tells him she is HIV positive shows her in daylight and him in night darkness suggesting more East in Canada, assuming she's in LA or Seattle or Vancouver or somewhere else on the West Coast.

The closing credits mention something like "B.C. air film crew". So I think the snowy, rural scenes may have been filmed in British Columbia.
