Court Reporter

What is the cone-like thing the court reporter is holding to her face while people are being deposed?

It's called a Stenomask (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stenomask).

They're still available, but I've never seen one in use. (I work in a law firm, and stroll by a deposition about once every other week. The transcribers we get in all seem to be using chorded keyboards.) It may be that they were never all that popular to begin with.

The Wikipedia article on this (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stenomask) contains the remarkable (but uncited) assertion that "Approximately half of all U.S. states still prohibit stenomask reporting." I'm picturing police bursting in on the criminal, with guns drawn. "Okay, buddy, take that mask away from your face. Now, very slowly, I want you to put it down on the table, and slide it over to me."
