Forgive me if my question seems rather idiot proof, but in the scene where Mitchel's persuading the Ottos to retain him as their lawyer to represent them in the court, I wonder who does he consider to be the accused of causing the accident? He mentions some deep pockets in town or the manufacturer of the bus. It would be much appreciated if someone cares to explain it.

I do not understand why Stevens is so sure there was any negligence involved. You never see him with any mechanics going over the brakes/steering or any other faulty maintained part of the bus. The way he talked I thought he knew something but he obviously didn't, so he was hoping to bluff the school board or whoever maintained the bus into a big fat settlement? And then I don't know why he gave up when Nicole testified that the bus was going 72 mph! There's a juicy lawsuit right there, a reckless bus driver employed by the school board, driving that fast on snowy, icy mountain roads with a load of kids. Big dollar signs should have been dancing in his head!
