One thing I never understood...

I've seen this movie a million times but I've never understood one thing. If things had gone as they planned how did they expect to get away with it? Did they think after they got the sister back the ex-mobster was just going to overlook the fact they cut his finger off and took 2 million of his money?

That was the problem, they didn't think everything through and were all too arrogant to know they were in a situation where they were screwed

Good question. I just saw it again this morning and asked the same question. I think because they were young, irrational, impulsive, caught up in the moment, etc...they didn't think they WOULDN'T get away with it, or that there would be consequences. They underestimated every aspect, and it seems that with Brett in control, they didn't have much of an opportunity to think things through.

Their plan was flawed, but that is what made the movie so great and Walken's character so good at causing confusion and descencion within the ranks.

I really liked this movie. Kind of a who-dunnit crime caper that doesen't follow formula.

And Sean Patrick Flannery and Jeremy Sisto were mmmmm mmmmm.

****SPOILERS KINDA*****

The two people who planned the whole thing were planning on taking the cash and running. The rest were young and dumb and so on and so fourth.

I believe they knew they were in trouble because the kid from Roseannne was kissing Walkens ass the whole time to try and save himself.

Long story short: they thought Avery's dad would pay up, but Avery must've said right away that his daddy was investment rich but cash poor (he says as much), and thus they quickly improvised and followed Brett's idea (he said it was HIS idea to get it from Charlie).

Only thing that makes sense.
- ELise and Max: clearly didn't care about hanging their friends out to dry (since while they sail off into the sunset, the friends stay behind where Charlie can reach them), only about them escaping (thought they would get away with it).
- Brett/TK/Avery: clearly were desperate (thinking ELise was indeed in mortal danger) and couldn't come up with a better plan, thus most likely hoped Charlie wouldn't be able to go after them afterwards (high profile kids, rich parents, him being semi-retired).
- Ira: being 100% innocent but 100% aware they would ALL be hunted down/killed by either Charlie or his people, clearly went for his only option: kiss up to Charlie and try to get him released as quickly as possible. Obviously his plan was the better one (no indication whatsoever Charlie or even Lono hold him responsible in any way).
