New Steel Movie

While this movie really wasn't good at all, it was also made during a time when the majority of the popular superhero movies and shows were more about camp than quality. Between the second two Batman movies, the Lois and Clark tv show, the Ninja Turtle movies (at least II and III), the Superboy and Flash shows, and just about everything else based on comic book characters from the mid-80s to late-90s, they most likely were forced by the studio to make a campy version because the studios thought audiences wouldn't respond well to a serious film. But nowadays, with most superhero movies being much darker and serious in tone, it would be the perfect opportunity to bring back the character to the silver screen and actually due him some justice. I always loved the comic heroes that didn't actually have any powers, but still felt compelled to use whatever skills and resources they had to try and fight crime and protect the innocent, and not just depend on heroes like Superman or Green Lantern. Also, with Superman's rise in popularity over the last 5-10 years, the new Steel movie could address the issue of his existence, which they left out of the last movie since they wanted to try to distance it from the Superman name. The suit and special effects would also be a lot better with the current CGI capabilities, although I'd rather see an at least mostly physical suit as opposed to going the route they did with the Silver Surfer in the Fantastic Four sequel. With all the planned solo DC character movies on their way, if they decide to do the inevitable Justice League movie, having a solo Steel movie under their belt would be nice, so they could utilize a character whose backstory has already been told and audiences are familiar with, rather than not including him, or having a shallow character that is there for little more than a cameo role.

Hey---the Flash was brilliant! Not campy @ all.
Admittedly, it had an odd ambience, because they made an amalgam of the various Flash characters. Barry's brother was named Jay--same name as the original comic book Flash. The clothing was modern, but the set designs & cars were from period pieces. Normally, I don't like shows that are less than 100% faithful, but this show was so creative it its cribbing--I loved it. Even its use of the Flash's villains was great.
The show even had decent ratings, but was so expensive to make, that it needed spectacular ratings to survive.

They are remaking it. It´s called IRON MAN: http://imdb.com/title/tt0371746/

A good Steel movie would be a good idea since Marvel already has a black superhero in Blade established and is about to film Luke Cage.

two different characters from two different universes.

reply

Are you saying the 1989 Batman was campy? That was a classic film.

reply

I grew up watching the original Batman film and I actually liked Batman Begins more.

Michael Keaton was an awesome Batman though.

And as for Steel: Yes, they should remake the movie. They should probably do a movie based on the "Superman dies" storyline, and then bring the character in, then make a spin off movie about him.

reply

To be honest, he's basically Iron Man ripped off by DC though (weapons design expert is shocked when he sees what his deisgns are doing to innocent people so he builds a metal suit and becomes a super hero), which makes it a bit pointless.

reply

I'd like that. Steel is one of my favs.

I'd like to see STEEL showcased in a DC Universe DVD, ala "Superman/Doomsday".

I believe in The Dark Knight

reply

Hell, I all for a Steel remake, if given a good plot and especialy a good director it could work. But before they go, and do that maybe they could have him in a Superman sequel then make it in to like a spin-off from that.

reply

Only if Shaq can play him again.

To the valley of the daaaaamned!!!

NEVER AGAIN SHALL SHAQ ACT!! With two of the worst movies in existance under his belt, I think it's safe to say that there is no way in Hell Shaq will ever grace the silver screen again except as a parody of himself (a la Scary Movie 4). Besides, we should begin to embrace a more thoughtful idea of comic book movies, and maybe make him played by someone like Don Cheadle, or Ving Rhames, or Michael Clark Duncan, someone that can actually act. And yes, it should be a Superman spin-off, but that was the idea for the film to start off with. The only reason it was even made was because the Superman Dies movie was in development hell for so long that they didn't want to wait anymore.

Oh the irony....Marvel has been notorious for "Ripping off" DC for years. Iron Man was a joke before he became a big blockbuster star. People thought of him as the "Poor Mans BATMAN." Because that's exactly what he is, a rich billionaire playboy, who got caught up in a tragedy, which inspires him to fight crime...Sound familiar? yeah i though so.

DC came first, they are innovators, marvel came afterwards and copied them, Notice almost ever DC hero & Villan has a marvel counterpart, and theyre almost all inferior, especially when compared to the likes of Batman, Superman, & Wonder Woman, who are the first of their kind.

Superman = 1st Super Hero Ever, a bonafide American Icon.
Batman = 1st Non-"Super" Hero Masked Vigilante, and arguably the most popular comic character EVER.
&
Wonder Woman = First FEMALE Super Hero Ever.

Even their so-called "superteam" sucks when compared with the Justice League...the Avengers? Pussies. They arent even in the same "League" (pun intended) None of Marvels characters are truly ICONIC, sure theyre popular beacuse of the movies, but ask anyone around the world to name a superhero off the top of their heads and 4 out 5 will mention Batman, Superman & Wonderwoman.

& the mere fact theyre gonna get a movie first is a crime agaisnt humanity. WB pisses me off in that they dont know how to handle their Comic properties. Theyre sitting on a gold mine and have only recently discovered so thanks in part to Chrisoper Nolan & his Batman Reboot & Watchmen. Now Weve got the Green Lantern Flick coming next year, A Superman Reboot Directed by Zack Snyder, Prod. by The Nolan Bros., Batman 3, Another Wonder Woman Tv Series, a Flash Movie, Green Arrow, LOBO, & a Hawkman Movie coming in the next few years.

P.S. Theres a Deadpool movie coming soon, guess who marvel ripped him off from? *cough DEATHSTROKE *cough

are you kidding, the flash was AMAZINGLY camp, ive got them all and i like them but come on dude, even mark hamill is in it and he plays over camp style joker characters, the whole thing was more comedy than it was serious.

steel was just another made for TV movie that wasnt quite a real movie, same as the flash and lois and clark

I LOVED The Flash series. It had a style & look all it's own. clothes from one period. Cars from another. They rethought the Flash, using characters' names, from all 3 Flash incarnations. Brilliant reinventing of the Flash's villains. Mirror Master, Captain Cold &, best of all---the Trickster. Hamill WAS deliciously over-the-top. I LOVED the Nightshade character(s).

Steel just sucked. It was an attempt to capitalize on Shaq's popularity. A good lead actor MIGHT have saved it. Avery Brooks, for one, but nearly anyone would've been an improvement.

I support a Steel reboot (not remake; it should be faithful to the comics, not this movie). If Man of Steel is a success, they could produce a new movie about John Henry Irons and have him face villains that wouldn't make it in Snyder's movie(s).

reply

I think if Man of Steel is a hit they might bring him in for a sequel.

I've got an ignore list longer than a Chinese phone book.

after the failure that is Green Lantern, I hope a Steel movie is not bad.

reply

I'd like to see a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie based on Superman's fight with Doomsday. I know that was adapted as a solo Superman feature, but I'd like them to take another crack at it. Animated or live-action, I don't care.

And then a sequel based on "Reign of the Supermen" and bring in Steel then. I'd like that.
