Why did Zander have to die in such a terrible way for sleeping with Carmen?
He didn't do anything bad to Rico. In fact he proofed to be a brave pilot and a soldier more than twice.
This whole alpha male rivalry between Rico and Zander took pretty embarrassing directions after the war started.
I kind of hope that Verhoeven purposely made Dizzy and Zander outsiders, so the audience will remember them better.
I think Zander was a pretty cool guy. Eh killed aliens and didn't afraid of anything.

shareI used to have an extended version of this film with deleted scenes in and although its been a while since I saw it, there is a removed scene where it shows Zander and Carmen having issues after she sees Rico is still alive.. so I'm not sure that he is her boyfriend at this point...
Anyway, it seems quite common in this film no one really cares about the others dying, as Rico isnt seen once to care about his family dying, Carmen barely mentions it, and no one bats an eyelid at anyone else dying either like Ironside, Sugar, Carmen's superior, or any of the other rookies. Only Dizzy really gets a bit of sympathy.
He was awful to Rico. He didn't hide his intentions on Carmen even when they were together, he then went out of his way to make sure he was training her which probably made her mind up for dumping Rico, and finally he acted like a child when he disregarded rank so he could fight him after he failed to goad Rico into punching him.
And no-one that dies is really spared a gruesome death in this flick!
I was happy to see him get killed because she F'd Rico over to be with him and she should've stuck it out for Rico. I'm happy today to still see him get killed. He was a douche anyway.
shareDizzy was a guy in the book, and Zander wasn't even a character.
Verhoeven wasted a lot of time with them because the original script was not based on the book at all.
