So, who opened the door? *Spoilers?*

I get the 'space ship' was in fact just a normal American one that had landed rather than crashed, and the crew members killed themselves carrying back the Sphere, however what I don't get is who opened the door to the ship when they first arrive?

I think Dustin Hoffman's character eludes to this when the door opens, without even touching anything. Any explanation?

The door opens after one of the characters put his hand on the door, probably sensing someone is there.

We have automatically opening doors all over the place nowadays. Seems like the same/similar technology.

The door probably didn't open because it was covered in water. But as soon as the dry dock chamber was installed in front of the door, the sensors could detect when someone (and remember it's an American/human spacecraft, so it is designed to open for humans) is in front and wants to enter.

That's just my theory, but it seems to be reasonable.

Holy *beep* that's brilliant. I'm subscribing to this theory immediately, and completely fanatically from now on. That's so cool! Makes perfect sense, and is simple and plausible. Nothing fantastic or spacey.

In the end, Okonkwo threw the Cat.

Which is fine but means the divers installing the doors never touched the door. Possible but really? No-one touched it? It's an answer though, more than i had a moment ago.

reply

Sure they touched the door, before the sensor was activated. Also, if it works like our store door sensors, the door may then close after everyone goes through it.

The door sensor only works during certain hours - just like at grocery store....

You're gonna need a bigger boat.
