A Weapon?

Okay I didn't read all [now 283] reviews of the film, nor did I read through all of the discussions. So maybe this has been said. But I think its plausible that the sphere is a weapon. Giving such immense power to a few individuals of any civilization would very likely lead to the abuse of that power and destruction of that race. Or at least some sort of apocalypse that would set them back centuries. This was suggested in the movie Species as a way to eliminate or conquer advanced races without having to fight a war. And if a race does not take the bait then the sphere's creators maybe wont see that race as a threat. Just a thought.

same plot is in Super Nova
but answer would be "no"

point of sphere itself that it is an object that creates/manifests
anything that its user (who entered it), can think of
BUT, movie shown how human concience is chaotic, how we cannot control our minds
and therefore it manifested all the worst things that those people had in mind
(their fears)

if it was a weapon, then they wouldn't be able to "forget it"
and make a sphere go back where-ever it went/came from
but would instead act as an virus, just sit there and wait for next victims

Interesting thought.

Maybe the purpose is twofold. Maybe it's meant to be a gift if the species discovering it is worthy of having such a gift; and if they're not worthy, then it will destroy them. So it will be helpful to a worthy species, and destructive to an unworthy species. Either outcome is good for the universe as a whole.
