Was Jason Patric the main fall-guy for why Speed 2 was so poorly received?

The main knock that I've heard is that he exhibited zero charisma and looked like he didn't want to be there what so ever.

I think the main problem was the fact that it took place on a cruise ship. I mean, it's one thing to rig a bomb to a bus, but something on water? I don't know, the plot seemed silly, but I watched it anyhow thinking it was going to be as great as the original. They sure fooled us.

Of course, replacing Keanu Reeves with Jason Patric was a huge mistake, but that was just one of its many flaws. The way they described how Annie (Sandra Bullock) broke up with Alex was ridiculous. There's no way she would have moved on or dumped him. That right there should have been a huge red flag to just drop this project dead in the water.

Oh, and the special effects were utter crap. I know, it was made in 1997, but the propellers on the boat looked God-awful. This is a movie where CGI should have been used sparingly. Practical effects would have been a better choice.

I can't believe the same guy directed this movie. At least it had the lovely Sandra Bullock in it.

At the end of the day however, the buck stopped with Jan de Bont. Wasn't it his idea to set the sequel on a cruise ship in the first place?

It went to see this shit in the theater back then. It was the first action movie I saw on the big screen and I hadn't seen Speed yet, so I wasn't too disappointed. Now I wish I had brain bleach to rid it from my mind forever.

reply

I really wish you kept on referring to yourself as "It." Your first two sentences were epic, and I thought I was being drawn into a surreal Stephen King-esque nightmare... but then you stopped!!!

God dammit you stopped with the "It!" Why? Why did you do it? Why did you stop? Why did you start?

reply

It's just like I said, man! It went to see this movie in the theater. I don't know what happened after that because I never talked to him again.🤷‍♀️

reply

Why did you go from "not too disappointed" to "I want to rid this shit from my mind forever"?

The film is not that bad. It you enjoyed it well enough the first time, what changed?

reply

Because I hadn't seen the first movie yet and because, like I said, it was the first action movie I saw in the theater. I mean, fast action scenes with huge visual and sound effects on a very big screen are enough to satisfy an inexperienced 14-year old moviegoer. Subsequent viewings on tv only proved how awful the movie is, though.

Two things:

1. How had you not seen an action movie in a theater in your first 13 years of life?

2. It's not awful. I just finished watching it for the first time and would give it a 6/10. The script is weak and Patric is an underwhelming lead, but Bullock is charming, Defoe is fun, the story is at least coherent and there are some solid set pieces that feature some great practical effects. I won't call it a "good" movie, but it was an "okay" movie. It's a decent action film.

reply

1.Going to the movies was not something my family did and the action genre would not have been my first choice.

2. It actually is an awful movie, especially compared to the first, but do you really want to have a back-and-forth on something neither of us can objectively prove? 4/10

reply

I believe he was. Not only was he an ill suited replacement, the story makes us the audience actively root against him. The first Speed movie did such a great job making us want Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock together. But to suddenly throw that away in the next film, and be so glib about it, is just insulting.
I think Patric is better in other stuff (his performance in Geronimo is wildly underrated) but he was ill cast as this larger than life pithy action hero. He always struck me as too taciturn for that.
But while his casting is a flaw of the movie, it's not the main issue. The movie is just boring. There's really nothing interesting or action packed going until until the halfway mark (in a two hour movie). And only then it's just people running in flooded hallways or jumping into water. It's like the SyFy B movie version of a James Cameron movie if Billy Zane was actually an evil genius who paid off the iceberg to sink the Titanic.
And that's the fault of Jan de Bont.

reply

His career did take a big turn for the worst after this movie.

Here's more on Speed 2 in the second link:

In 1997, Patric starred opposite Sandra Bullock in Jan de Bont’s action sequel, Speed 2: Cruise Control.

In the sequel, Bullock has broken up with Keanu Reeves’ character from the first movie. Patric played her new boyfriend who also happens to be a cop because the script was originally written with the assumption that Reeves would reprise his role in the sequel. when the couple decides to go on a cruise, they are once again menaced by terrorists. This time, Willem Dafoe played the bad guy.

The original Speed had been a surprise success. Expectations for the first film were so low that Reeves and Bullock were not contractually obligated to appear in sequels. No one thought sequels were likely. Bullock agreed to return in order to get financial backing for her movie, Hope Floats. But Reeves decided he would rather tour with his band, Dogstar.

At the time, it seemed like Reeves was making a huge mistake. But as it turns out, passing on Speed 2 was probably one of the better decisions of Reeves’ career. Reeves claimed that Fox was furious and launched a propaganda campaign against him. De Bont said the role in the sequel could be played by any young actor, as long as he could have chemistry with Bullock. Given that Bullock was basically a chemistry machine, any actor should be able to fit that description.

Bullock initially suggested Matthew McConaughey to replace Reeves. But McConaughey passed to star in Contact. Several other actors including Christian Slater were also considered. After McConaughey passed, Bullock recommended Patric, whom she had wanted to work with since seeing his performance in After Dark, My Sweet. De Bont wanted a bigger star, but was reminded that Bullock was an unmown when she made the original Speed. After watching Sleepers, De Bont cast Patric.
