I Love Speed 2
I think Speed 2 is a great movie and one of Dafoe's best. It happens to be my favorite Dafoe movie, followed by The Boondock Saints.
The reason is because a lot of the campy, seemingly silly dialogue just fits him. Really, Speed 2 isn't an action movie that can be taken that seriously, so you get to laugh at some of the more rediculous parts.
I like movie bad guys that are very animated and diabolical, yet make you like them more than the heroes of the story.
Dafoe had that goofy grin going constantly in this one, and he was so weird and cool at the same time. He just strutted through the ship, did what he had to do, and did it all alone, without any cronies or fellow bad guys to help him if you notice- something I think is pretty neat.
Not to mention, he had some of the funniest lines and moments in the film. Like (WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD) when Alex catches him in the hallway just after Dafoe was stealing the jewelry. He and Alex banter for a few moments, then Dafoe says, "I was just making conversation." It was so out of nowhere, yet very funny.
I also liked when he threw the captain overboard and then calmly took a photo with the two ladies who walked up to him. And again, that toothy smile.
Dafoe is the man. Period. His character in Speed 2, Geiger, is my all time favorite movie villain. Him, Eric Qualen from Cliffhanger (played by John Lithgow), Mr. Joshua in Lethal Weapon (played by Gary Busey), Simon Phoenix in Demolition Man (played by Wesley Snipes), and Cyrus The Virus in Con Air (played by John Malkovich).
And before I close, I know this movie had flaws. First thing, where were all the cameras that would have picked up on Dafoe's activities before he started all the trouble? I know he took them over under his own control as the movie went on, but still. Then, at the end, when that big tanker explodes, just before it does, the captain tells everyone to get off now, yet a few seconds later, it explodes. There would not have been enough time to get safely away from that ship's blast, meaning everyone likely would have been killed, something Alex and Annie ignore as they drive away in their litte speed boat.
But I ignored all these things because it was such a good movie. In fact, I like it better than the first one- way better. I say bring back Geiger for Speed 3.
Well they ain't from Cleveland
