they obviously dont have a problem with asking her for anything else so why not?? she clearly has connections right?? It makes more sense than asking the ex and at least if Lem found out it wouldnt be such a big deal.

The movie establishes Lem as wanting to handle his own job situation; any help from Bird in that area he wouldn't have liked...and he probably would have especially resisted help from Teri, who he seemed to have a bit of an adversarial relationship with. And knowing Teri, she probably would have lorded it over his head if she was able to hook him up.
