The movie was rated R, so I doubt it was supposed to be a family movie.

I sort of agree. I know it's not a FAMILY movie but the sex scenes in this movie were unnecessary and yes of course people do have sex but I didn't like the ones in this movie. I could see if they made them more loving with foreplay and everything like in the Notebook but in this movie it looked like something striaght out of a porn movie. I understand the one between Miles and Faith was probably supposed to be like that since they weren't in love and were just well you know that other word I can't post here but the scene between Lem and Bird could have been a nice romantic love making scene especially since they were newlyweds, but they didn't do that.

some couples dont always want to be romantic - it excites them sometimes LOL

reply

I know that. I mean my husband and I aren't always romantic but this is a movie and I wished they have of given us the sense in their love scene that they loved each other instead of having sex in that "Take me now" kind of way.

I agree with the original poster, and for crying out loud...why the need for name calling? That was so unnecessary to call names just becasue someone disagrees with you! It's true...why do black movies have to have explicit sex scenes?? DUH...I know we have sex but when I'm watching a MOVIE I want to watch the MOVIE...dont' take me in the bedroom with you!!! Hugging kissing is great but I dont' need the porn!! Other than it was an ok movie.

I remember two sex scenes in this movie that were hard to bear. I hate it when movies that are trying to convey a message of wholesomeness, feature a couple having a quickie in the their GRANDMOTHER'S bathroom, and the girl stuffing a sock in the guys mouth to shut him up. It's like OMG? And I'm not even going to mention the husband and the slutty sister screwing in the piano room, although it was a turn on.

WHOLESOME? NEVER

The comment above me is funny. -- by the way, she was stuffing her panties in his mouth.

reply

oh man, that's even worse.

reply

;) Yep it is.

I hate when a sentence begins with “Why do black” anything. I enjoyed that scene…I should how even though they got married they still have that passion (I know the are newlyweds)…I love to see passion…and no it was not even close to a porno…nothing was showing on either scene…The sex was conveyed with a little motion, but mostly from the cries of passion (from him)…Don’t be a prude and don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

Also…She silenced his loud azzzzz…lol

The panty gag was one of the best scenes in the whole film!

I am the original poster and the I agree with the posters who said that the cursing and the sex scenes are gratuitous..... the movie could have skirted perfectly along a PG 13 boundary and it plays as a family morality tale with the young boy being the narrator and the story being told throough his eyes...... The sex scenes are superfluous, yet hot....... but they are unneeded and it devalues the movie in some fashion as a family movie......... Its a movie you want kids to watch right????? Oh except the over the top lnguage and sex...... it wasnt even that violent of a movie, and trust me, South Siders in Chicago are faced with those elements.

jewel 9898, even married couples deviate from lovemaking sometimes and have full on down and dirty fu*ks :) It's OK. As for the sex in the movie, if the scene had called for romance I'm sure it would have been played that way. But they wanted to show how they were really hot for each other at that early stage in their relationship. Believe me, eventually they will reach a stage in their marriage where they will be lucky if they make love, or fu*k at all. They'll just roll over and look at each other and say, "Damn, another forty more years with you! *sigh*" lol

With the Lem & Bird scene, it almost seemed like Big Mama knew what they were going to do because she started laughing as Bird goes to see him.
anyway, I don't have a problem with the sex scenes themselves but this movie does seem as if it doesn't know whether it's family oriented or more adult. If I took my daughter to this I wouldn't have expected the sex scenes and a lot of the language. The movie seems inconsistent in this way as someone else mentions they have a 12yr old kid as a narrator, but scenes that aren't appropriate for family viewing. The series was this way as well but at least it was on late nights on Showtime instead.

reply

Lem and Birds sex scene was tacky. Up stairs with all of the relatives in the house?

reply

Lem and Bird were newlyweds, young newlyweds at that. That's how they tend to act -- spontaneous with sex, and it isn't always "romantic." While I agree that the sex scenes in this movie were awkwardly placed, I didn't have that much of a problem with how they played out.

Back when this movie first came out, I rented it at Blockbuster for me and my grandma to see. I thought it would've been a wholesome family movie, kinda like my family. But when the sex scenes came on, talk about arkward (sp?)!

reply

I still remember when this came out in '97 and my Aunt wanted us (Her, My Mom, Sister and I) to go see a movie that Thanksgiving evening. And this movie probably was getting a lot of backing as well as pretty good soundtrack, so probably seemed fitting for the holiday. Maybe she figured the worst it could have was strong language. But boy when that scene with Miles and the cousin came around, that was the most awkward moment. Sitting there, not knowing what exactly to do, or if they're staring at me. As a young girl I was not looking to see Michael Beach's behind lol. I honestly didn't even notice the scene with Bird and Lem until years later. So that was another surprise
