if the Helen who stays with Gerry has to work two jobs so they can make ends meet and stay on in the flat, how does other Gerry, in the alternative where she leaves, afford to stay in the flat without any apparent job of his own

Even if they had money saved, she would still like to work as much as possible, rather than wait for the bank to call her about NSF... so he might have been living off of that. Or he borrowed some money from Russel. Or he was independently rich, or pick any other possible explanation.
