Everyone was miscast

None of the actors/characters had any chemistry:

Helen and Gerry
Helen and James
Helen and her best friend Anna
Gerry and his "mate" from the pub - Gerry looks like a snobby middle class man whilst his friend in the pub was a cockney London geezer - no way would those two be friends in real life.

Gwyneth Paltrow does not pull off the "normal girl" role well, either.

Everything just seemed so contrived with this movie. The plot idea is good but the film just failed to deliver for me.

I really liked the movie the story was different. I'd like to see a remake with a better cast. Was this a low budget film cause in 1998 im sure there were better British actors to cast. I did like james though.

I'm not crazy M'Lynn, I've just been in a very bad mood for forty years.

Depends on what is "chemistry" to you. If you were expecting something like from a Hollywood blockbuster, then, I am not surprised. To me, the film and all the relationships were done really well. Could have been a tad better in some ways, but there are so many brilliant points about this film to focus on something that was not really there (like lack of "chemistry").
If you want to see true lack of chemistry, watch any film with Cary Grant. So many women dying for him in those films, but he is always his usual, stiff, self.
