'The' Scene

Okay I want to see this movie but the whole nail penis scene, how is it? Does it show a close up/still images of it? I would literally pass out if I saw a nail go through!

reply

You see him hammer it into his penis. The worst part is when he pulls it out and it bleeds everywhere.

reply

It's very odd, but I've seen this film a couple of times, and remember parts of it quite vividly, but I don't remember the penis being nailed. It can't have made much of an impression on me, either that or I had my eyes shut :)

reply

Maybe you blocked it out of your memory.

reply

I find it really incredibly disturbing that people find the nail scene more disturbing than the fact that Bob Flannagan actually DIES ON FILM.

How is a nail through his penis more disturbing than watching a horrible disease kill someone? He is desperately gasping for air while Sheree completely looses her composure and begs him not to die.

reply

Well...you don't see him actually die on film, but
you see him just before and after. I agree this scene was
more disturbing than the nailing scene.

reply

We can't choose what, if any, diseases will claim us, not that it makes it any easier to endure. However, nailing one's penis to a board IS a choice, and one that can be hard to believe despite having seen an entire film based on the reasoning behind it. That's the best way I can explain it.

Also, since it's part of the film's title, I knew he was going to pass away at some point so I guess when it came down to it, I just got tense and upset. "Supermasochist" is also in the title but doesn't really spell out specific things that will happen, so when the nail scene finally shows up, it is quite shocking.

Maybe it's just easier for people to accept death in whatever way they can than accept harming oneself to such an extreme.

I don't think it's disturbing if folks concentrate on the nail scene more than the death scene. It's just more sensational. How often do you see something like that? It stays with you. If they said his death wasn't disturbing at all, then it might be weird, but otherwise I see nothing wrong.

reply

ok, i have this on my netflix and the penis sounds disturbing yea blah blahblah but the whole dying on film and hist wife freaking out sounds a lot more sdisturbing to me. Like I think i would flat out cry if i saw this. Thanks for the heads up. I will watch with caution.

I agree with you. I had very little problem watching the nail through the penis bit, but I was extremely disturbed by the death at the end. My boyfriend's father died a year ago from lung cancer, and it hit way, WAY too close to home for me. To make it worse, my boyfriend came into the room right at that very scene, after not watching any of the movie, and only watched the death scene.

I lost it pretty hard for the death scene...not really because I was sad, but because I had become so emotionally invested in him during the movie that I was just emotionally spent by the time he actually died. The scenes of him being confused and not being accepting of his death were really, really agonizing to see. I'm crying again just thinking about them.

I watched my grandma die from cancer that had spread to her lungs etc., and at the end she was gasping just like that. So, I guess if I had to pick the most "disturbing" part, for me atleast, it would be the end of the film. I'm glad I got to watch this though, because Bob Flanagan seemed like a great person, and it goes to show that just because a person does something that you might find controversial or disturbing, it doesn't necessarily make them a bad person. He seemed like a really sweet guy that was dealt a really bad hand.

The penis part was disturbing to me. I understand why it bothered people, especially men. But I still hold that the death scene was far more disturbing.

I agree. His suffering and death were more disturbing to me than any of the S&M stuff. Very hard for me to watch.

reply

For me, that was when his SO shoved those rubber balls up his rear end.

reply

It was in the DVD extras. It's even worse than I imagined it would be.

And I'm a woman.

But it wasn't as disturbing as the scene where Sheree stuck those pool balls up his butt.

Just reading all this, I was thinking I couldnt remember this scene either. Turns out the UK BFI dvd is cut by over 3 minutes.

From the BBFC:
"To obtain this category cuts of 3m 42s were required.
Cuts required to two scenes showing strong sado-masochistic activity (asphyxiation, the piercing of the skin of the penis, the insertion of a large metal ball into the rectum, the hammering of a nail through the tip of the penis) which would be highly dangerous if copied and which are likely to encourage imitation in viewers with an existing interest in sado-masochistic activity. Cuts made in accordance with the terms of the Video Recordings Act 1984 which requires the Board to have special regard to harm which may be caused to viewers or to society through the actions of viewers ."

****spoilers below****

Yes, it is an extreme closeup. Basically he holds his penis against a board and hammers a nail through it and into the board. It's quite intense, and the first question is "Is that fake? Why isn't he bleeding?" Then he pulls out the nail and starts bleeding.

Although I found the scene where he's gasping for air and DRIVING TO THE HOSPITAL complaining he's going to pass out a LOT scarier!

- Yes, I actually saw this movie on the big screen. I was NOT expecting it. I saw it while in University, and I'm sorry to get off point for a bit, but in University I was a Criminology student, a discipline that mainly attracts women. (I know - who am I to complain, right?). But I hung out with Computer Science students - 99% male - and most of them were, uh, "sheltered". Like, many of them had never had a drink (FORGET drugs!); many had never had a girlfriend; they all still lived with their parents, etc.

Maybe that kind of "focus" is needed to be a Comp-Sci student (they would literally get assignments, and then "stock up" the computer room designated for them with quick energy food, mega-caffeine drinks, sleeping bags, anything they would need to work from 4:00 PM Friday to 7:59 AM Monday straight through); maybe they knew a hell of a lot more about using (and communicating through) computers than the average person back in the mid-90's, I dunno.

Back on point, though, was that I had started expanding my movie knowledge greatly in high school, and then taking every Film Studies class I could (and turning 18 - the age of majority in Alberta)... combine that with these Comp Sci students helping me track down "tape traders/sellers" (yes, still way back in the days of VHS), and I wound up getting some strange, twisted videos.

However, about half the twisted movies I was seeing at that point were either in Film Studies or at Edmonton's one TRULY indie theater. So I would either order these tapes, tell everybody "Hey, I just got a copy of [Deep Throat, Guinea Pig, Death Scenes, bizarre porn, etc.]; come to my place on Friday to see it!" As "upstanding" as these students were, not one of them EVER turned down the invite, and not one of them EVER left the room/covered their eyes, etc. during these flicks.

... But often I got a chance to see (with some Comp-Sci friends) some twisted krap on the big screen. The two that stick out are Salo, or 120 Days In Sodom during it's first ever appearance in Alberta (they had to have someone from the Alberta Ratings Board read out a list of all the horrible things we were about to witness - it was kinda funny because it started with, "This is your final warning re: content", and ended with, "This is your last chance to leave".) Hah.

Of course, I also saw the premiere of SICK at the same theatre (along with a bunch of friends). It wasn't that bad until the "penis, nail, and board" scene. I *TOTALLY* agree with those who say the worst part was him pulling the nail OUT, because that's when the blood (of strange consistency and colour) started flowing. Every guy in the theatre basically went into a fetal position, as if to protect his genitals (including myself!), because - and I fully believe this - being in a dark theatre with a huge screen and other audience members REALLY heightens strong emotional scenes, whether it's happiness, fear, disgust, whatever.

Quick note: I also think that any man forced to watch "The Scene" by a mean woman should be allowed to force her to watch the last five minutes of Lars Von Trier's Antichrist. But not the whole movie - that would be just plain mean.
