Happiness in Slavery

Have any of you seen Bob in the Nine Inch Nails video, "Happiness in Slavery?" That was the first time I ever saw him.

I am really inspired by people who are not afraid to be way out there.

i've seen it. its weird.

reply

hey all,

Little known fact that 95% of what you saw in that video was real.

reply

I'm not surprised. After all, Bob was a super masochist. Just the killing and disemboweling part was faked.

Pretty niffty music video. But does anyone know if Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist is readily available? Could I find it at the local music store?

Yeah, but is there anywhere you can actually BUY the film? I don't wanna just rent it. I also don't wanna deal with Netflix; a couple friends of mine have rented through them, and gotten some REALLY banged-up DVD's, along with the occasional empty package.

Theres a DVD available to buy in the UK made by the British Film Institution. It's quite readily available here

...and it's cut by over 3 minutes!

reply

You can buy it online. I bought mine on Amazon, I believe.

Got introduced to Bob Flanagan through his work with Trent Reznor and was morbidly curious to find out more about his life. The interesting aspect to this documentary is the intention of Flanagan's displays of depravity to provoke feelings of revulsion and sickness comparable to that of the suffering of someone with a life-threatening illness. My impression is that through his art, Flanagan wished for people to understand the pain and suffering he lived with throughout his entire life. Not for the faint-hearted (I felt very squeamish and uncomfortable throughout), but it does an excellent job at providing some comprehension of the pain that those with cystic fibrosis suffer from.
