Shelter getaway car is a rare, all stock, 1972 Mustang fastback Sprint

The getaway car in Shelter is a rare, all stock, 1972 Mustang fastback Sprint that was owned by actor Cody G. Carson who also played “Wayne” in the movie. Carson would not allow his car to be damaged, so he was paid to construct a replica from salvage as the stunt double (which he was allowed to keep after filming). Carson paint-matched the stunt double car in every detail including the grey primer patches. The stunt double Mustang looked so much like the original that the crew got them mixed up one day and started rigging the stunt double car for a driving sequence (it had no engine or transmission). Carson continued to drive the Mustang as his POV for several years after the filming of the movie and it was featured as “the Shelter movie Mustang” in two local TV commercials that he later produced. Carson eventually sold the car when under financial hardship and would one day like to find it and buy it back. The stunt double car was crushed by a former friend while it was in storage. Pictures of both cars can be seen online by googling “Shelter movie Mustangs”.
