what?!?! (spoilers)

I just watched this movie on tv, and it was so messed up.... So, the guy gets institutionalized, gets out, meanwhile the girl has been married, then she's just like "Sorry, gotta go?" The whole part after he got out went by so quickly, and there are next to no complications! It seemed like maybe the network cut something, because it didn't seem like enough to constitute an actual film otherwise. There was a teensy bit of drama, that one miniscule fight over the gun, but otherwise it was so easy for Robin Wright Penn's character that it didn't make sense! I am really confused here... is this the way the movie is actually supposed to be?

i dont like this movie but does anybody know the name of the song James Gandolfini plays when he takes Sean Penns girl in his apartment and beats her?

reply

I guess you've never seen Dead Presidents

Im just as confused as you are very_enraged. Which character are u supposed 2 like in this film, in films u have to like atleast one. Sean Penn's character shoots a guy and wants nothing to do with his daughter, John Travolta's character gives his kids beer and tells them to *beep* off. And worst of all, Robin Wright Penn's annoying accent. She just left her 3 little girls without even sleeping on it, not that that would make it acceptable. And after they drive away leaving her daughters behind, all she can do is beam at her husband.

reply

I just fail to understand what the point of this film was. I'll admit to being pretty confused at the closing credits because no person with even one decent bone in their body could leave their 3 kids behind and drive off with some nutcase.

"Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try."

"Which character are u supposed 2 like in this film, in films u have to like atleast one"

I would like to know where this is written, because I would like to own that book to save some money on toilet paper, people seem to have a problem with this film because of the choices the characters make. I do not get this at all. I want to see different types of movies about diverse types of characters, not everyone on earth is going to make the same choices we make, and I want to see movies about these people. It's not an endorsement its just a story, would you not watch a movie with Hitler in it because you don't agree with genocide? Just say "I won't watch movies with murder, rape, drug use, promiscuity, drinking or smoking" and enjoy your Disney films, oh wait Bambi, Lion King, Finding Nemo all have killing in them, well enjoy sitting in your home with the curtains drawn.

reply

so you equate being a sociopath with making differnt choices lllllll. btw god is sean penn1 ugly midget. yes , people do need a likable character. also , a socio always acts the same , so its boring

reply

What's not to get? Eddie and Maureen are unbearably in love, he is committed and all she can do is wait for his release. Her marrying John Travolta's character and raising her kids is just passing the time until Eddie's released. Though she couldn't stand leaving her daughters, going with Eddie was something she had to do. There was no option of her taking them with her, not only because her husband would never allow it but because both she and Eddie are unstable and although they love each other very much, they share a turmulous relationship.
Not the best film in the world but the acting was brilliant and a film doesn't need a complex storyline to be effective.

I agree with 1011 - it really is all pretty clear. A previous poster said that she left without even sleeping on it, but I feel like she has been thinking about it for ten years. A fantastic movie. Brilliant actors. Makes you laugh and cry.

reply

I couldn't find it any less clear. So, we're supposed to have sympathy for the woman who's pregnant and constantly drinking or the boyfriend that's constantly pouring alcohol down his pregnang gf's throat? It's a joke. I hated them as I would hate them in real life. I live in NY and see trash like that all the time. I wouldn't be able to stand being on the subway w/ them, but we're forced to be w/ these people for two hours. Horrible.

what a dream to have a husband that loves you thaat much that he would take you child and raise her then have more with you knowing you are in love with someone else hoping he wqill return. what a heart breaker!

"Jimminy Crickets!"

reply

NO!! We are not supposed to have sympathy for anyone in this movie. I grew up in NJ 20 minutes from NYC, so I see the same thing you do. But, when you see people from South Bend, Indiana or somewhere like that come to NYC, what do they do? They stare at all the weirdos in the city. They are curiosities and things to be gawked at and remarked about. The fact that we are all still talking about this movie ten years later tells me that the movie did its job. It left an impression on us.

reply

gawk for 30sec yes, not 2hrs. also every movie on here is discussed 10yrs ltr, what an idiotic statement

reply

Remember, though we are supposed to believe that she is terribly in love with Eddie, she never writes or calls a single time for all the years he has been gone. How is that love?

reply

These people are both insane, that's why it's love. It makes sense to them. Our notion of love is different than theirs.

reply

BRAVO!!! At least one person in these forums understands this movie. Damn, I wondered when I was going to find someone who wasn't complaining about the morals in it or bitching about smoking while pregnant, leaving three kids, drinking while pregnant, loving a nut job, etc.

reply

COME ON. Sean Penn's character is kinda like Maureen's worst addiction. she told her husband that before she married him. she knows that she can't raise her kids properly once her first guy got out so she left them with someone she knew would. it ain't perfect, but if she knew in her heart she could never live without Penn's character ( sorry forgot his name), she spared the kids from having a wreck of a mother. i find it hard to dislike her. for some reason to most people it's still less acceptable for a woman to leave her kids. which is baloney. IMHO

I can't read comments like yours anymore without writing: how in the &*% can you endorse this narcissistic, borderline personality behavior? There's nothing romantic, or melancholy about it. What the hell is wrong with you? No one is meant to be liked in this movie. Get your &%* head together. Families get wrecked like this and we all suffer. This is truly nothing to laugh at. And, also, quit with the "less acceptable for women to leave their kids" bull &^$. Do you have any idea what children that have their mothers (and dads) abandon them do to them? Spend some time with one or better yet, marry one, you wouldn't be laughing. This is absolutely &%$ ridiculous.

reply

dude i soooooo agree, that chick is WAY fuct. leaving behind 3 kids so you can relive some high school style romance is complete *beep* but, at the same time, if you are such an irresponsible mother that you would do that, then the kids are better off without your trifling ass anyway. and BTW nice jump cut to 10 years later nick, hows about maybe a LITTLE hint that an ENORMOUS amount of time has passed since eddie's recent battle with sanity. this whole story, however well acted by the players, is completely preposterous.

reply

I really liked her character, I find it strange that people are so outraged that she leaves her kids.... it's not like she is leaving the country or anything. There are plenty of films were a man leaves his children to go get revenge on baddies etc. I dont see how just because you choose to leave your children in custody of there father (in the home where they grew up and are secure) rather then take them with you to live with a man with a history of mental health problems, you are an irrasponsable mother. Is it that all fathers are automatically worse parents and cannot be trusted??? Or perhaps once married with kids you should just NEVER EVER split up no matter what. Hmmmm it's all very strange to me.

reply

You mean the black screen that was 3/4 of the way through the movie with the big white letters that said in cursive "Ten Years Later..." wasn't good enough for you?

reply

it's one thing to leave your kids for another man. It's another to leave them and show no signs of regret or remorse

I expected a more serious tone especially at the end durning the fight over the gun, the music they played gave the feeling that this was borderline slapstick comedy

despite the fact the children are running around, 2 men are fighting over a woman that's the mother of the children and there is a gun being wrestled over. Coupled with the fact that's the last time the characters will probably see each other ever.

I saw the point they were going for I think..that the love was to strong not even a family with another man could stop them. But it ended up appearing she was just as insane as eddie was.

Love is great...but to abandon all reason is well not worth it. And how it was delivered in the movie I found un-entertaining. The solution could have easily been Maureen getting yet another divorce and seeing her kids on the weekend...

travolta gave the best of the performances...the other performances seemed to be a mix of hit and miss lines with hit and miss acting.

reply

i understand gettting together with travolta to "pass time" while waiting on penn to get out of the institution but WTF would you have kids with travolta if you're merely "passing time"???

reply

I see this as a very confused woman who does whatever is in front of her. She was forever getting in trouble when she was with Eddie, and when a strong personality like Travolta's character has, enters her life she is like a child. She wants to be taken care of, and Travolta is the guy to do it. She says, when Eddie gets out, that she still loves Eddie more, that Travolta knows this. So they have discussed this situation. Also, Travolta treats Robin Penn in a rather tough-guy way. He's a very good and responsible guy, but I can see how Robin Penn's character isn't really in love with him. He's more of a rescuer. He swears at the kids, treats Penn's daughter in a mean way then apologizes, but he acts like this throughout his time on screen. I think that both of the Penns are playing children in grown-up bodies. Travolta is lucky to be shed of Robin (I cannot remember her character's name). He doesn't feel that way at the time, but he will.

reply

Again this is another film that they stick on really late and I gotta go to work so I end up only watching a third. The movie made a big impression on me, however. I love any film that shows the city as a blood-sucking twilight zone of wasted lives and addiction. Add mental illness to the mix and what you get here is about 30 minutes of very gritty, depressing but moving moments of cinema. I generally dislike films where people live like these people: one bottle to the next; one fist to the next, but I feel compelled to watch. I dont want to discuss anymore because I havent seen it all.
(isnt the big theme that they feel sorry for each other but married to Travolta she only feels sorry for herself..??)

reply

why did eddie not want to take his daughter with them ?

reply

I know a dysfunctional couple just like this. Believe me when I tell you, Robin's character thought she was moving on. But she did know that she was weak to Sean's character. That's why when John Travolta tried to be reasonable and suggest they all go to dinner so Sean could have visitation with his daughter and become extended family, she tried to tell him she is incapable of just seeing Sean. As long as she kept him totally out of their lives, she wanted to stay with John. But seeing him again and his alpha-ness will to be with her, her own will power/reason goes put the Window.

reply

I hated this movie.
