A poor movie

This is all so Hollywood.

Entertaining on a Saturday evening but empty of reality.

What exactly are you trying to say?

.. for a start you cannot have Chinese and Japanese actors pretending to be Tibetans! Not in 2015. There are good actors in Tibet -use them?!

A real dis-service to Tibet.

This reeks of an American playing an Chinese Detective in the 1950s

This is so sad of a lack of integrity.

Shame on you Brad Pitt to showcase such a farce....

No, it's true. The film is badly-rated.

reply

Badly rated?

My screen says 7 out of 10. In a world of fair, honest rating (not the world of IMDB rating) 7 would be considered a pretty good score rather than a bad one.

Agree with robbmonster. 7 is not a bad score. Some of my favorite films are ones I would rate a 7 -- usually because I like the film very much despite some flaws that keep it from being a masterpiece. I thought this film certainly rated a 7; it was thoughtfully done and the cinematography was excellent; it was true to Harrer's story for the most part, and the actor who played the young Dalai Lama was spectacularly good. I thought the relationship between them was nicely developed, though the storyline was compressed somewhat (as often happens).

In real life, Harrer remained friends with the Dalai Lama for the rest of his life. Harrer says that while he was described as "tutor" of the Dalai Lama, he actually learned far more from his student than he taught him.

I like taking this film together with Scorsese's Kundun, also a beautiful film on a difficult subject but one which covers more of the Dalai Lama's life, up till his journey into exile.

It's a fine film. actors don't have to be from the same ethnicity as their character. That's why it's called acting.

Pitt is another guy I happen to like in nearly 100% of the films he was in.

But good Lord him trying to do an Austrian accent was a complete joke in this movie. It was literally painful to watch.

reply

Oh yeah, Tibetan actors are lining up in Hollywood for parts. geesh, stop being such a drama queen.

It is not great film, but it is good. It strives to be an epic but falls a bit short. However, the story is moving with spectacular composition. I found the cultural exchange fascinating. It's a Hollywood film but so what. It would be hard for an independent filmmaker to create such a lavish expensive cinematic production.

It is not a great film, but it is good. The story is moving with spectacular composition. I found the cultural exchange fascinating. Pitt seems a natural at playing the self absorbed egocentric Harrer. Thewle's contrasting portrayal of the intelligent, level headed Aufschnaiter is very good.

Many complain about Pitt's accent but I think that is somewhat trivial. True reality would have the actors speaking Austrian accented German, and then Austrian accented Tibetan. That would be a tall order.

You are an idiot and you are obviously a Chinese sympathizer who still follows the idiotic philosophy people in racist societies hold. It does not matter what the actual ethnicity or actors is. They represent characters. They are not supposed to match the genetics of the original people being depicted. The actors faces in any historical movie do not look like the people being portrayed, so it literally does not matter.

When people are so race and ethnicity conscious like you it is almost always a manifestation of real racism. I mean, normal people look at the story of the film and the words coming from actor's mouths. Not even the white actors in Seven Years of Tibet are actually Austrian. Does it matter? No.
