Emily and her mom

Was Emily so naive she couldn't see Greg was just using her for sex? She even mentioned they never went anywhere except to the place to make out. She was acting like she expected him to want to have a baby. Didn't she know he was about to go off to college? Or was she really just trying to get this rich boy to marry her? She didn't appear mean or manipulative, but I may have missed something. I know that stuff worked 30 years ago, but people don't 'have' to get married anymore. I can't figure out if she was supposed to be naive or just sneaky. Did anyone else pick up any clues that would tell us the answer to that? Her mom didn't appear to be stupid even though she is a blue collar worker from the 'poor' part of town. I thought she had a nice house and big yard, but they said she was poor.

And what about her mom's smoking? She smoked outside at home because Emily wouldn't let her smoke in the house, but when she went to Greg's home she lit right up in his big expensive living room. That didn't make sense to me. They could have probably done better with someone else on that role. Tess Harper didn't do the blue collar thing convincing enough in my opinion. Pamela Reed or Park Overall would have been great in that role.

How could Tina be poor and live in that nice house in that nice neighborhood? Tess Harper, by the way, doesn't sound Southern enough to portray a North Carolinian. Pam Reed, Park Overall or Polly Holliday would have been more appropriate in the role of Tina.
This movie was quite good despite a few goofs. I would watch it anytime.

Tess Harper, who was born in Arkansas, tried to get rid of her Arkansas hillbilly accent but has ended up playing lots of country women! She's done just fine playing Southern women, especially blue-collar workers and housewives:
Kentucky Woman (1983)
Tender Mercies (1983)~opposite the great Robert Duvall
Chiefs (1983 TV miniseries)
Silkwood (1983)
My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys (1991)
Willing to Kill: The Texas Cheerleader Story (1992)
Broken Bridges (2006)
There likely are many more, but you can see that she often plays Southern women, a number of them lower/lower-middle class.

She's thoroughly believable in this role! And, it's not surprising that she has a nice house, which probably didn't cost that much because it's on the poorer side of town. We grew up very poor but had a fairly nice house with a basement. If she's a popular, hard-working waitress, she might make enough in tips to keep them comfortable. (Think of that the next time you eat at a restaurant or cafe. Even a quarter can mean a lot to waitresses. I know; I've been there!) We see the daughter sewing and explaining where she bought the buttons, so they're used to "making do", which is a way of life for some of us.

It's not surprising that she didn't question her daughter's relationship though she might have acted worried occasionally since she herself "had" to get married. Maybe she was too tired after work to hover or figured that her daughter was near graduation, therefore able to make her own decisions.

By the way, I live in Southern Illinois, where we have a distinctive brogue. If you want a fakey accent, check out Kyra Sedgwick in "The Closer". She's awful! Where in the South do they speak like THAT?! I have relatives in most Southern states, and none of them sound anything like "Brenda"!

Maybe the house Emily and Tina lived in was in inheritance which is common in a lot of areas in the South. I like Tess and Soleil. The only that bugged me was that they didn't look mother and daughter.

I take after my dad's side of the family and look nothing like my mother. Look around, and you'll see this: a mother and child bearing little or no resemblance to each other. That's not uncommon. We don't know what her father looks like; Tina could take after him. Me? I look like my fraternal grandmother~the spittin' image (aka spirit and image), as they say in these parts.

Her smoking in his living room didn't make sense, but they did that to make her look trashy.

I was thinking same Emily was naive couldn't see Greg was using her for sex. I will guess Emily thought Greg would fall for her if she gave him enough sex or trap him with a baby, which back fired on her and he killed her when she would not rid the baby

Did we order this diner to go?cause there they go!

I didn't think she was naive, she actually seemed kind of dim-witted to me. Missed the nuances, didn't get the message, wondered why she never met any of his family….but still spoke as if "we're going to have a baby and build a life together" would overjoy him.

The mother, Tina assuming she can just smoke in someone else's home was unbelievable. I can't imagine anyone being so rude. What a scumbag. And her daughter Emily was trying to trap Greg instead of being realistic and discussing things. Not saying Greg was innocent, but her leaving no option but to have the baby was all about controlling Greg.

i dont see a scum at all relating to her actions, however (Nama Gemo) lol
i just think the obtuse writer,"felt a strong need to make her look as such"but she did put the cigarette out fast lol"

Tess is a more type of C actress in this, but not a great actress at all.IMHO.

I didn't feel ANY bond on screen watching them.I try to when she died but i did not feel it at all. There just was"something missing" i.e.

1.)realistic tears-emotion,throughout entire movie!Where were the tears.horrible.

2.)i didn't see any resemblence AT ALL,only 1 hug for 5 sec. when the wanna be cool greg, pull up in his classic mustang.

3.)i didn't feel her as a mother in this at all,but i do enjoy some of tess harper
prior work.

Blue collar feasibly for THIS movie just was not for her who knows. But i did like her with Nicole scenes, personally the 2 of them seem MORE like mom n child, also look more alike lol
Many on FB LMN page(s)were saying for years, analogous to what i am saying too.
But Soleil was awesome so cute love her!Ari who played NICOLE in her 40s now still look great, and Greg look nice too...

adios
