When the mother was killed it was Ellie. When Ellie was killed it was Inger.

What I wanna know is why that soon-to-be-retired cop jumped in and shot that guy for no reason? A little too cinematic for me... the slow motion and all.
Actually, Inger wanted vengeance because she was her mother's favourite one.
The cop "jumped in" and shot the guy because he was holding Ellie, making it seem like he was Ellie's killer. He knew Ellie had killed her mother because he saw the tragedy mask that was used to kill her. By shooting Lawson, he simply ended the case, thus leaving the field with an unopen case.
By the end of the movie, we see Inger develop her own Electra complex now that both mother figures are dead.
Been a while since I saw this one, but didn't Inger kill her mom and her sister? I remember some stage masks and they were found at the scene of the mother's death and in a case that I think either Inger or Ellie owned. Can't remember. Can someone explain how it is that Ellie killed her's and Inger's mom?
shareEllie killed her mum, the suitcase that the mask was in was the one that Ellie always packed when she threatened to run away. One night when she's angry that her dad's not coming home she goes and gets the suitcase from somewhere outside where she hid it. Later she takes her mum's wedding ring out of it. Someone from her school told the detective she was absent the morning her mum was killed, and at the end when she hears a noise in the house she takes the tragedy mask she killed her mum with to defend herself, but she ends up getting killed by Inger with the comedy mask. The tragedy mask is found on the floor at Ellie's murder scene, but Inger has the comedy mask in her backpack.

Both the mother and Ellie were bludgeoned in the head to death with the masks. It appears that the masks must have been made of some heavy metal of some sort. Looking at the size of the masks, and if they were made of iron, they could have weighed around 10 - 15 lbs each and had kind of protruding feature around the cheek which could easily crack a skull if hit hard enough or a number of times in a murderous rage.

Inger didn't kill her mom, it was Ellie, because
(a) The suitcase didn't belong to Inger, it belonged to Ellie, so why and how would Inger kill her mom with the tragidy mask and put it in Ellie's suitcase, doesn't make sence! (We know it's Ellie's suitcase because you see her thraten to Run away and start to pack the suitcase)and how would Ellie know to climb under neath the house in the pouring rain to find the suitcase if it wasn't hers? Pure luck! I dont think so.
(b)And also remember when Inger finds the suitcase and mask inside in Ellie's room, she's shocked and quickly puts the mask back into the suitcase and sits outside ellie's room in shock! This is where she got the idea to kill her sister but for what reason? I dont know!

Inger also gives her sister a murderous look, after finding the mask in Ellie's suitcase... I think that's a sign of revenge...
But for me it looks like over time, Inger maybe realize why her sister killed her mother, and started to get the same syndrom. Why I think that is because in the end, when Lena finds out, and there is some heavy eye-contact, look at Inger's eyes; they have alot of make-up, just like Ellie when she adapted her mothers look!
I was thinking the same thing when I saw the look in her eye. It was like she was saying to Lena "You're next."
shareEllie killed her mum because she had a sick fascination with her father - that's why she started trying to take her mum's place in her father's life. Inger was closer to their mum and wouldn't have killed her, but that's partly why she killed Ellie. There's nothing in the movie to suggest that Inger killed her mum.

Inger did not kill their mother. Ellie (Stiles) murdered their mum with the tragedy mask. On the day her mother was killed, Ellie pretended to go to school but instead she hid in the house. While her mother was upstairs, she threw a golf ball through the back door window and then snuck up behind her mother and bludgeoned her to death. She placed the murder weapon in her suitcase and hid it deep underneath the house. A while later, she retrieved the suitcase and brought it to her bedroom while she contemplated running away.
Some time later, Inger discovered the suitcase and the hidden murder weapon. She was horrified by the discovery but didn't tell anyone. Her anger and hatred grew and when she realized that it was Ellie that had driven away their father's new wife (Lena) she decided to kill Ellie, the way Ellie killed their mother. She copied the crime to the exact detail, down to the golf ball and shattered glass.
Their neighbor, Lawson Smith, (who incidentally was having an affair with the young Ellie) discovered Ellie's bloodied body and was carrying her out of the house when the detective appeared and shot him dead. And since a dead man can't defend himself, everyone assumed that Smith had committed both crimes. The evidence was damning - his motive was overwhelming as he'd carried on affairs with both mother and daughter and both had eventually left him. He also had clear opportunity - Ellie's blood was splattered all over him as he carried her from the house. Noone would ever consider that it had been another much more shocking perpetrator.
Later that night, Inger and her father wept in each other's arms while a concerned Lena took care of them. But when Inger looked up at Lena, her eyes were dry and cold - and Inger saw the truth in them. History was repeating itseld. Would she be next?
Unfortunately that's where the show ended.
My question is that:
When their mom was killed, she came to the kitchen because she heard a noise. A rock was thrown from the outside of the house and broke the glass, that was shattered on the inside floor.
So was the case when Ellie heard the noise.
So who threw the rock? I figured out it was Lawson. So when Inger killed Ellie, how could she have managed to throw the rock and run back inside to kill Ellie? Is that possible or am I missing something?
when the mum was killed it was a golf ball that i'm guessing lawson accidentally hit through the glass pane in the door. I am also unsure of who threw the rock when ellie was killed, unless it was lawson because she decided not to run away with him and he was getting back at her. Perhaps it was just a coincidence that Inger chose that moment to kill her. I dunno, thats my theory anyway - until i hear a better one
shareFirst time posting here but I had to sound off. I just finished a VHS copy thatI picked up at a sale somewhere, anyway.
First, Ellie killed her mother because somehow she suspected her infidelity, when she was snooping she caught Lawson and mom on the floor... In her crazed mind she couldn't let her mother do that to her beloved father, so she had to die; it's as simple as that. Ellie is the one that threw the golf ball through the window attempting to frame Lawson. If you'll notice it takes about thrity seconds for mom to get downstairs and investigate, she sees the golfball and starts to simply throw it back outside when Ellie ambushes her with the tradegy mask; which appears to be made out of terracotta clay just like a brick.
Ellie starts to assume moms appearance and duties so to say...she even starts to flirt with moms boyfriend. After Inger finds the msk in Ellies suitcase she realizes that it was Ellie and starts to piece a few things together. When Inger decides to kill Ellie after she has dear old dad run off momma Leena which Inger has started to like as a mother figure. Inger over hears Ellie and lawson on the phone and the rest of the pieces fall into place. There are no golf balls for her to throw through the window so she improvises with the rock. Again another thirty seconds or so Ellie comes down the stairs with the only weapon she has, the mask, Inger hides in the same place that Ellie hide, when Ellie gets to the right spot Inger strikes. Ball game.
Inger also sets up Lawson for the cop to kill, because she knows he'll come over to find out why Ellie is jerking him around. Inger already knowsa that the cop is at the neighbor lady's house with Leena. Fewer that five minutes after Ellie is killed, the security service calls Lawson gets there and so does the cop. Its all nicely wound up for the cop because he suspects him of killing mom already.
At Leenas apartment when she finds the other mask in Ingers bag does she realize what is happening.
Wow strong discussion. This movie was pretty cut and dry people.

I think it was Lawson who threw the rock to get the mom's attention. Elle might have withnes her mother affair, and knew that her mother was planning on leaving her father. I think Elle killed her mother because her mother was having an affair, and plan on leaving the father and taking the children. Which would mean that she would take both Inger ,and Ellie . Since Ellie loved her father, she wanted to prevent that from happening, therefore she killed her mother.

I had the same problem (well similar -- you seemed to have put more pieces together than I did) about which I posted on the Sisters thread. If we are to consider Inger the Wicked one, I think more should have been devoted to her part, especially toward the end. It just went too fast for my being able to figure it all out. Maybe a second viewing will make the difference.

I don't think that Inger is developing the same complex as Ellie. I think she simply gives Lena that look because she realizes that Lena knows Inger killed Ellie, and it's a look of, "you better not say anything."

well i think it was Inger who throw the rock into the window and tried to get lawson attention and lawson heard something and checked if everything is ok with inger and Ellie . then Lawson carried Ellie and probably to go to the hospital . then the cop came and thought it was him that killed her . but not , it was inger !
