Quiet possibly the stupidist plot I have seen..A second civil war.

This mive was just plain stupid.

I know I am not alone here

reply

I enjoyed the movie...never saw the "mive" though.

reply

I enjoyed this movie a lot.. between all the stars and just how ridiculous the plot is made it awesome... The sheer fact idaho... IDAHO of all states is starting a rebellion is hilarious... c'mon... this is funny as hell

reply

What's funny about that? Idaho is the most anti-government state in the Union, and if a second Civil War did start, I would bet Idaho would be the start. And let's hope the good guys winn this time.

reply

What's really funny about it is that we're seeing part of it played out in real life... right now... in good ole 2006.

reply

No kidding! The thread was started in 2004 and notice how each reply has taken a different tack to it as the years roll by. At first it just looked preposterous and now its on the verge of being prophetic. Sad thing is the movie was intended to be preposterous!

reply

At least we do not have a department of ethnic affairs yet ... but I would say give it time.

That said there is a set legal procedure for solving an issue such as was presented in the film. Nullifcation and a national referendum should preceed any states leaving.

reply

Even back in 1997 the plot was not that ridiculous as Ebonics had officially appeared just a year earlier and Arizona was pushing for an English-only law. It was clear even back then the US was rapidly allowing special interest groups (mostly minority related in some way) to fragment the country.

As for it being silly for Idaho being the first to rebel that was not that crazy as that is were many anti-government groups have their HQ or largest membership. The movie was high satire but has become more and more relevant as time has gone by. I mean it is actually written into the New Mexico constitution that both English and Spanish are the official languages of the state.

reply

No, New Mexico has no official language. And how would that show that this issue has become more relevant in 2007 than in 1997 when New Mexico's constitution was written a hundred years ago?

reply

The thread has seen a lot of changing views over the past 4 years.

It's now 2008. The stock market is spiraling downward. Congress was threatened with martial law if they didn't approve the $810bn bailout. The very idea of free elections has been undermined by easily hacked electronic voting machines. For our next president, America now sees itself choosing between a corrupt old man who has an ignorant hockey mom for a running mate and a black man who is supposedly a muslim anarchist. Things have gotten a bit absurd. I wouldn't believe it if I weren't living it.

reply

Well, it's still 2008 but after the election. The "black man who is supposedly a muslim anarchist" has won, which has proven that we *can* make intelligent decisions sometimes. Stock market is still spiraling downward, we're officially in a recession, and Congrass has passed the 900 billion dollar bailout. Hooray for us, huh?

reply

Wow, 2010 already and we are starting to see how the "black man who is supposedly a muslim anarchist" has become the "socialist president of a crumbling economy"... LMFAO how times have changed! Still hearing about immigration, although it is superseded more by healthcare reform, "political reform" in California, more corporate bailouts, and an honest and goodness debate on terrorism. Yep - no problems in the future here! :D

Welcome to 2012, soon to be 2013. Barry's been reelected.
And a few thousand people in half the states are petitioning for secession. It's no more or less plausible today than it was 15 years ago, but a few fringe lunatics will keep on trying.

it's 2013 and I would say, yeah, a second civil war is a possibility, you can debate the likelihood, but there's pretty much no denying it's within the realm of plausibility

And here we are in July 2014. And what do we have? Truth is stranger than fiction.

reply

We're now approaching the end of 2016 and our new president is a former reality TV star who was roasted on Comedy Central and once fought Vince McMahon in a scripted wrestling match... Let's see the future top that.

Thanks to Trump's controversial Muslim ban and all the chaos and dissension he has caused since being sworn in as president the premise of a second civil war comes across as a lot more chillingly plausible today than it did twenty years ago.
