Gale mentions it's been a few years since the 1st movie's events, so does this mean it takes place in 1998?

"All these kids got killed a couple of years ago in California"

If the events of Woodsboro in scream happened in 1996 (1997 here in the U.K.) then Windsor College murders were (as the OP said) 1998 (1999 in the U.K.)

Spring 1997 is when Scream 2 took place. Scream took place in 1994 I think they showed on the calendar in the kitchen at Stu's house. I could be wrong.

Then Maureen Prescott was murdered in 1993. I guess Scream 3 took place in 2001 Sidney was out of college by then. Scream 4 took place in 2010 or 2011.

Scream 1 takes place in 1995, Scream 2 in 1997. So Maureen Prescott was murdered in 1994.

But wait a minute, in Scream 4 there's a Principal Himbry memorial monument in the school hallway, and it says 1946-1996. So this means Scream 1 was 1996.
