Anyone Else?

Does anyone else think this is one of the most underrated films of all time? Am I the only one?

reply

I am in complete agreement. This is one of the best films I ahve ever seen

I agree that this movie is totally underrated. The only reason I checked it out (In either late '99 or early 2000) was because it has Patrick Stewart in it and as I am a huge fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation I was understandably curious!
But I really did enjoy the flick; so much so that I kept an eye open for a video/DVD release in the UK which at the end of the day bordered on futile! The only way for me to own one was to order a Region 1 issue of the DVD and watch it on a multi-region player...
I think the reason why it is underrated is because it was a movie made for television. To know about this movie, you have to be bothered to read the synopses of dozens of movies across dozens of channels, during the correct week that this movie is broadcast and beyond that, make a conscious effort not to miss it!!!
Would it be a problem if you missed say: 'Back To The Future'? Of course not! You can rent a copy of that movie at anytime. Not so easy to even find a copy of 'Safe House' though!
This movie's problem is that nobody's ever heard of it!!! - Their loss, truely!

I am a Trekkie also but I stumbled onto this on Starz or Cinemax or Bravo one day. I is underrated but by no means the most underrated. I was convinced he was paranoid to the point of schizophrenia and did not see the ending coming (although I felt it was unconceivable for that to happen). I did enjoy it and is Stewart's best other than TNG and Shakespearian roles.

well i don't know about "of all time" but it's a good little movie, i agree - very suspenseful, and with some neat twists, for sure! i haven't seen it for years; isn't there a bit of comedy to it as well? i'd like to see it again....

reply

Yep, in my top 20 films for sure (assuming trilogies count as 1) :oD Patrick Stewart is THE dude, makes me proud to be British!

reply

Not of all-time but it is really good. I saw it for 5.50 at K-Mart and snatched it quick.

I agree it is underrated, and I have watched it over and over again. The girl at blockbuster told me to watch it and until I moved from there, I always asked her opinion on movies. I'm glad, because I've seen a lot of great movies because of her. One thing though, I've lent my copy to friends and they won't even watch it, no matter how good I tell them it is. Same as Mr. Destiny. I dunno? Free movie? I watch any free movies.

well.. you really can't trip on people for not watching what you recommend.. I remember buying, and this was BEFORE DVD.. back in the stoneage of "RENTAL PRICED" VHS tapes.. I remember BUYING Pulp Fiction on RELEASE DAY, sight unseen.. I was just a HUGE Reservoir Dogs fan.. and was dying to see what that director had cooked up.. and saw a trailer for a small film.. I always thought hmm.. turned out, that film was "Clerks", which I LOVED the trailer.. rented it FIRST day on video (small town here).

When I returned it.. someone I knew from school, I was a Junior maybe? what was good... I said this one.. they looked at the box.. saw it was black and white.. and put it back on the shelf double quick..

go figure... Jay and Silent Bob went on from there (this was.. late 94? pre-Mallrats which I believe came out.. early 95?) would make Jay and Silent Bob further into icons of the stoners... and still going.. but I digress.. point is.. can't let it bother you..

oh.. and good call on Mr. Destiny.. I know I like a few too many chick flicks.. but in my book.. a good solid flick is a good solid flick.. and that's one that always holds my attention.

I also remember seeing this movie years ago on TV, and I too think it's very good. I've been looking to buy this movie for years, but living in DK I haven't been able to locate it at all. Real bummer ...

I also love this movie and just in case anyone is interested you can purchase it through amazon for about $10.00.

I rented it from Blockbuster and thought it was an interesting film because it involved interior shots that aren't done so much in this genre from what I've seen. It was a believable story, interesting because of the presentation of computer links that have become important and dangerous ("Carnivore" back then I think used to monitor Internet traffic, Sliwa's "Guardian Angels" watching chat rooms, the current Presidential "pardon" of "secret police tactics" makes the film almost prescient, i.e., a horror we were going to be a part of between "Our Man in Halcyon" (NY Times op-ed on President Bush on a medication that left FBI agents walking armed and forgotten through metal detectors) an impeachment over sex and another George Bush posing on a former German turkey farm in Texas, bought from proceeds of a baseball team CBS' CEO's brother wanted, but the Governor just had to have. I think the Chinese character in one edition of the I Ching I recall was #49 "Revolution" though perhaps Japanese (the computer screen access puzzle). Anyone know?

I don't know who reads this at IMDb, but the date on this film is listed earlier elsewhere ("...made by Patrick Stewart in 1995/1996)" see: http://nicky_smith.tripod.com/film.html by a fan that has a more accurate date considering its erstwhile importance in my mind, where it is important in its time.

I'm surprised many people haven't seen this.
I'm not a fan of Star Trek, but I saw this movie years ago,
and I was beyond impressed by Stewart's performance, especially
during the ending.
I never remembered the name of it until today,
but I never forgot his performance.

Safe House is showing this week on the Hallmark Movie Channel.

Just saw bits and pieces off this on channel 69 in the Boston area. It seemed good until the ending. Totally didn't see it coming. I enjoyed both lead characters though.

I have to weigh in and say it is a less than great film. I found the writing to be less than punchy and the directing to be unconvincing. I really felt bad for Mr. Stewart having to portray this unbelievable character. The drills are terrible. (Where did they get that, Inspector Clouseau? ) The lack of support from his family is just not credible. The dementia is not believable. I've seen dementia live and up close and this isn't it. Mr. Stewart remains one of my favorite actors. This, regrettably, is possibly his worst choice in roles. My 2 cents and worth every penny.

reply

dementia? honestly.. that's the thing.. until almost the VERY end of the film.. he wasn't even playing dementia of ANY KIND.. at all.. in fact.. he was sharp as a tack the ENTIRE TIME of the film.. in fact.. there's nothing to say he still wasn't just that he may have been in shock.. or even possibly drugged during the course of the film resulting in his.. problems that he began having... but even then, I'd only categorize it as minor memory loss.. and not full onset dementia, at all.. paranoia yes... dementia? no.

reply

I agree that it's underrated. What makes this film so much more amazing than it could have been is Stewart's performance; it's nothing short of spectacular.
