DVD

Does anybody know if this movie is gonna come out on dvd?

reply

It has been released in England but nowhere else. You can buy it at www.amazon.co.uk and they will ship it to the US.

Just so everyone knows, I ordered this movie from England and it WILL NOT play in the US. I have tried and it just says "wrong region". I learned the hard way and want everyone to know that a movie from another country will not play in the US. I guess we'll just have to wait till it is released here in the US.

reply

Um, yeah, that's the whole "Region" thing. I figured that was common knowledge. But it isn't hard to de-regionalize a DVD player.

reply

How do you "de-regionalize" a DVD player?

reply

Normally I don't do this, but... Rocketman! What kind of player do you have (model)? PC or set-top?

reply

you could just buy a region free player

The only problem with buying it at Amazon UK is that they are all Region 2 DVD's not playable in the U.S. unless you have a region 0 dvd player. Be careful. I haven't been able to find any region 0 dvd's.

reply

That's really unfortunate that it's so hard to find this movie on DVD. I'd like to own it someday.

One day DVDs will be standardized so that regions don't matter and each disc can be played on any machine.

It was released on DVD in the US in April, 2005. No one seems to have it though. I've found in on Disney's DVD website but you have to sign up for their membership to get access to it.

Found this petition to get this movie released in North America:

Honestly, if they publicized the release and spent a few bucks on advertising they could find a whole new audience who haven't seen, or even heard of this great comedy.

Instead, it seems that Disney likes to blow money on crappy direct to video sequels- anyone else hear they have an Emperor's New Groove sequel coming out in December?? Ridiculous. Not to mention such anticipated sequels as Aristocats 2 and Cinderella 3...

reply

Feh. Why am I not surprised to find out Disney has a 'Columbia House'-style movie club w/ exclusive crap unavailable elsewhere?

However, I notice that their dvd version of Rocketman is only a full-screen edit...

reply

I had a friend back at BYUI who swears to me that he found it at wall-Mart one time and quickly grabbed it. Not sure if this was true, but he had no reason to lie. I would like to find it somewhere.

I found Rocketman at Amazon on dvd and vhs although the dvd version is full screen and the lowest price being sold is for $50! Its a great movie but I don't know if its that great. I would rather buy the vhs version for $15 and try to dub it to dvd myself!

reply

does anyone know where to find this movie without having to pay nearly $50 online and without having to join some website?

reply

"Rocket Man" has NEVER been released in the US with the exception of Disney's DVD Club! Anyone claiming they bought it from Walmart is incorrect! Anything bought online is either the 'Club Exclusive' or a 'bootleg' (unless you buy the foreign release). The DVD from the club is FULL SCREEN only. Disney has a tendency to release their smaller Live-Action films in FULL SCREEN only.

You could rip a copy of the european version onto your computer and that would make the dvd region free and then just put it back onto another disc and it will work in any dvd player.

reply

That's PARTIALLY true. Ripping to your hard drive would indeed remove the Region Coding and Encryption. But, IF you are in the United States you still would not be able to play this on your DVD player unless you have one that is capable of playing PAL formatted discs. US and Canada players will not play these by default, even if the disc is REGION FREE (the disc has to be NTSC).
The best option for those living in the US is to get the movie from the Disney DVD club or from someone on Ebay that is selling the US Region 1 disc (from the Disney Club).

I am also looking for the DVD, but with me it doesn't matter what region code it is. Did anybody ordered it from england from amazon? Does anybody has it or sell it? The only way to get it from the Disney Club would be to join, right? But I don't want to do that just for one Movie. Anybody here, that is a Member and could order it for me?
Thanks

reply

Hi bimmerkid! Yes, I'll order one for you if you like. I believe the total with shipping for the dvd is $23.90. Once it's shipped to me, I would have to ship it to you (shouldn't cost more the $2.00). So your total would be $25.90. If that's ok with you, drop me an email and we can swap address info and discuss payment info, etc.

RickWJ324 - are you still ordering the Rocketman DVD for people through your Disney movie club? You may have received too many requests - so,if you cannot I'd understand. Please advise. Thanks.

I actually have an unopened copy right now that I picked up for someone and they never sent payment. Let me know if you want it. Your total with shipping would be $25.00.

Thanks rickwj324. Yes,I am very interested. Just to make sure I'm clear on this - is this a new, sealed, region 1 dvd? Let me know what I need to do to start the purchase process. Thanks again.

Yes.. it's a Region 1 dvd, still shrinkwrapped, directly from Disney's dvd club. I can take a picture of it tonight if you like. I was about to put it on Ebay, but if you are interested, let me know and I'll hold it for you. You can send a postal money order (for $25.00. Just visited Harland's site and he's sold out. Apparently had a limited number.

Its a bit of a pain, but if you simply MUST have it, you can load PAL version disks into your computers' DVD reader/burner (there are legit programs that will strip the region requirement so you can play 'em on the computer) and just rip it to a file (not as DVD data, but as an AVI or other format) then use your favorite dvd authoring software (I use Nero) and tell it to encode (NTSC because depending on the type of rip, it may try to keep the pal format, but you can force-change this) and burn to a DVD, and that will (ultimately) solve your problem. I've done it before, and while the quality may not be 'factory-level' its certainly better than VHS -it just depends on weather or not you think its worth the extra work.

I bought at at amazon for $13. No special features or anything, but I'm just glad it's out on DVD.

reply

I own this movie on DVD now, but it's nothing special. You can tell the studio just dumped it onto a disc to get it over with.

There isn't even a scene selection feature on the main menu, so if you want to skip ahead to a certain part in the film, you have to manually fast-forward to it from the beginning.

reply

That's such crap! This movie deserves a special edition with commentaries! I'm watching my VHS right now and was bummed to find out the existing DVD was the standard "don't give a *beep* by the studio. You'd think Disney would have a little more pride than that. It's such a great film for kids and adults. Truly a throwback to silly, lighthearted comedies of the fifties and sixties.
