purchasing "Regeneration" on dvd

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF I CAN FIND THIS FILM ON DVD? ALSO ANYONE KNOW IF ANY OF THE FILM WAS CUT WHEN IT WAS RELEASED IN THE USA AS "Behind the Lines"? I MET DIRECTOR GILLIES MCKINNON LAST MONTH AT THE TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL AND HE COULDN'T ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS EITHER. I'M HOPING SOMEONE CAN HELP ME. THANKS, TREVOR

reply

Don't know if you've had this answered by now, but it's yes. The movie is available on DVD, at least in the UK.

Hope you find it.

I dunno if u guys realized, but right beside the movie poster and stuff, u can order it to uk, canada, u.s, or germany.

reply

I just bought it on ebay for £8 delivered, but thats region 2.
www.artificial-eye.com is the address of the company that distrubtes this dvd.

reply

Just purchased this DVD together with Gangs of New York for just 5 euro the pair at a bookshop in the Netherlands. Original DVD's of course. Seems that some people are making huge profits....

For those of you in Region 1 - ie North America - Behind the Lines is not the same version of the movie as Regeneration. Scenes are missing and do not appear in the same order. Even dialogue within certain scenes is shuffled about to the point where the conversation makes little sense. Regeneration is one of my favourite movies and I was thoroughly disappointed with my purchase of Behind the Lines on DVD. Why a different version of the movie was needed for the U.S. - God only knows.

If you haven't seen this movie, dust off the VCR, and try and find a video copy of Regeneration.

reply

That's odd. I have Regeneration on video and a few weeks ago I bought 'Behind The Lines' on dvd, region 2 and it is exactly the same as the video.

reply

My "Regeneration" DVD is region 2 and shows running time 110 minutes. DVD details for region 1 "Behind the lines" (I am quoting a site, I do not have the DVD) show 96 minutes. Odd enough...

reply

I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not "Regeneration" is available in Region 1 widescreen DVD format. I've found VHS widescreen versions in Region 1 format and (DVD) widescreen versions in the Region 2 format but none to fit my specifications. Any links or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The title of the film concisely illustrates its raison d'être. It's a story about individuals reconciling the horrors they've witnessed, both with themselves and the naive tranquillity of the land they've returned changed to. Altering its title to something banal like 'Behind the Lines' reduces it to a run-of-the-mill war movie and shows no respect or consideration for its subject matter.

It's a beautiful film. Its emotional content never descends into mawkish sentimentality, it's humour is subtle and warm. You care for each of the principal characters, not because the horrors of their personal experiences are thrust into your face and you're told by the director how to feel in any given scene, but because the actors makes us interested in them.

Thank you for the heads up because, other than the title change, I was never aware of the difference. I have the Region 1 dvd version (distributed by Artisan) titled "Behind the Lines" and it does, indeed, run several minutes short, clocking in at 95 minutes. Plus, it has no bonus features and is pan and scan rather than widescreen. I think it only cost me $6, but it frustrating to have a version that has been hacked up for no good reason. I had this title on video as well and it was also the short version. I actually have never seen the full version because it is not available in North America. Ridiculous. Especially when subpar WWI films such as The Trench and Deathwatch are availible uncut here on dvd (although they both lack the original Region 2 bonus features as well).

I bought this film yesterday in Helsinki for 5.99 €. Best investment I've made in a very long time. The the film is great, acting performances are stunning and the characters very intellectual. Makes me want to read war poetry

reply

reply

Just an expression huun-thats a british girl for you!

But seriously, i really really REALLY want this DVD and cannot get it anywhere. Does anyone know if the distributors have stopped making it for some reason? I mean, schools use it for English Literature classes so why not?

reply

After a bit of searching (the Artificial-eye website is not very helpful), 'Regeneration' is unfortunatly out of print here in the UK. I don't suppose they'd care to share why with us?

reply

I would LOVE to know why. I mean, we watched it when I was doing my War Literature exam so it is still needed in the Uk for A level stuff!
*mutters*
I so badly want a copy. *sighs*

I you don't mind paying international delivery, a region 2 DVD is on sale on www.e-bay.it. I also got my copy on e-bay (in Italy). Don't know about the extras and don't know whether you mind having the scene titles in Italian, but surely you can enjoy the film in the original English.

reply

same here.

i read it was A-level english and caught the second half on tv last night.

i'm searching high and low for it but no luck so far...

i'll be sure to let you guys know if i chance upon it somewhere.
