US Version Edited?

I was wondering if the US version was edited because I was reading a review on Imdb and one reviewer believed that the US DVD version is edited and missing some scenes or 18 minutes. Can anyone give me some insight?

reply

Yes, the honeymoon scene was edited out, as far as I know. They are on their way to England on a ship and apparently stayed the whole time in bed together. In this scene Mrs. De Winters breasts are clearly visible (probably a reason why this wasn't shown on American television). On the last day of their honeymoon, Mrs De Winter goes to a beauty parlor on the ship where she gets her hair and make up done. And when Maxim sees her, he snaps at her. She is heavily made up and she probably reminds him in a very bad way of Rebecca. And I've noticed that a couple of seconds of 'the confession scene' have been edited. Probably because you could see Mrs. De Winters nipple in the unedited version.

Thank you. I was wondering what was cut. I knew the dvd had to be incomplete because it's distributed by WGBH. All of their Masterpiece Theatre, Classic, Mystery, Contemporary DVDs are the edited version as seen on PBS. So when I checked amazon uk, I noticed the running times differ by 13 minutes, and that doesn't count the filler material added on the US dvd: Russell Baker's comments, Masterpiece Theatre theme and credits, and advert for Mobil.

Thankfully, Masterpiece has finally gotten it. A few years ago they started making sure all their programs would be released on DVD in the original, UK broadcast version.

I think that sounds about right (18 mins cut) because amazon uk says 189 mins and the WGBH DVD says 176 minutes on the dvd cover.

The US version also includes Russell Baker's opening and closing commentary and the Masterpiece Theatre opening and closing themes, plus advert for Mobil oil.

You can also watch the correct version on YouTube.

Thank you!

The new Mrs. deWinter's visit to meet Maxim's grandmother is also cut from the US version.
