In know that any movie directed by Coppela will attract a big name cast, but while Danny DeVito is a great actor,I think this guy should have played the character of Deck.

Charles Martin Smith: (some friends used to insist he was Ernie from "My Three Sons," and my best efforts could not dissuade them) is one of my favorite actors (esp. Never Cry Wolf and Starman). However, he is just too likable to play the smarmy, slimey Deck.
Remember Danny DeVito in Other Peoples' Money? - despicable and worthy of an Oscar (at least a nomination)! I agree with the sentiment expressed elsewhere in this thread - trolling through dumpsters - perfect for Danny.

shareI LOVED Danny DeVito in this movie. He gave the performance of his career, IMHO. I think the three leads in this film, Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, and Jon Voight were all perfectly cast.
